The chances are that you've seen "Ads by Google" on a variety of websites and perhaps wondered what they were all about. The fact is that you can probably get "Ads by Google" on your own site and if you do, you can look forward to getting paid by Google.

The system is called Google AdSense and it does two things really neatly.

First of all it allows virtually any website owner to make some money without having to do too much - all you do is paste some code that Google gives you into your web pages. This code creates the ads that you see and when someone clicks on one of these ads they go to the advertiser's site. The advertiser is then charged for the click by Google and Google shares the money with you. You don't have to worry about billing a load of different companies or anything else: this is all done for you as part of the AdSense service.

That much is fairly straightforward and good news.

But the really clever thing about AdSense is that the ads you see on your site are relevant to your content - automatically. So if you have a web page about mobile phones you'll see ads about mobile phones on it. If you have a web page about holidays in Tasmania, you'll see ads for holidays in Tasmania on it. Google's technology scans your web page and decides what it is about and then searches its database of well over 175,000 advertisers to find the ads that are most suitable for your page.

By making the ads relevant to your site, Google does you two favors: the ads can enhance the overall experience a visitor to your site gets which means they are likely to return, and because the ads are relevant to your visitor, they are likely to get clicked on.

And when they get clicked on, you make money.

To make most money with Google AdSense you need to develop web pages that are about high value topics. In other words, build content on your site that is likely to attract ads that pay highly when clicked because not all ads are worth the same.

In fact some ads pay many dollars a click whereas others only pay a few cents.

The art of maximizing your AdSense income is to understand how to attract high paying ads onto your pages and then drive a lot of traffic to those pages. Once you've done that you can look forward to getting paid by Google on a regular basis which makes Google AdSense one of the most attractive affiliate programs on the internet today.

Adsense Authors: Who Are These People?

Adsense is a program designed by Google to help publishers monetize their websites using high contextually-accurate ads. Adwords is the other side of the coin which allows any person to create an account with Google and bid on keywords or key phrases to have their ads appear in either the search results ad placements, or in content sites that display Adsense ads.

Over the past few months I’ve identified a group of authors, writers, and publishers that I call: “Adsense Authors.”

My definition of an Adsense Author: Any author that uses article marketing as a strategy to drive traffic to their website in order to drive their adsense ad revenue sales.
These “Adsense Authors” really understand how to fully leverage article marketing as a strategy like no other group of authors.

Here are the commonly shared traits of these authors:

1. Their articles are short, between 200-600 words.

2. The quantity of articles they produce are typically from 25-300; around a tightly focused niche topic.

3. The TITLE of their articles are very keyword rich: the first two, three, or four words are the most important in rank. You won't find these authors wasting the first 4 words of their title with non-keyword-rich words (such as "a" "how to" "top" "the" "of" etc).

4. The BODY of their articles has high keyword density for the terms they are targeting.

5. The KEYWORDS they use when submitting their articles are intelligently selected based on the overture or other keyword research tools; they are not haphazardly selected.

6. They do not load up and bloat the guts of the BODY of their articles with links back to their sites; they know this slows down the acceptance of their articles for reprint by other publishers.

7. Their articles are fun, fast, and easy to read. Often they will use bullets, numbered lists, and quick sub-heads to make the article easy to visually digest.

8. Lastly, their RESOURCE BOX is brief with only one or two links in them: one link to their full website URL, and one anchored text link to a keyword of importance to their niche. They know that big, ego driven resource boxes slow down the viral nature of article marketing strategy.

Conclusion on Adsense Authoring

Adsense Authors have discovered the secrets behind fully unlocking the power of article marketing to drive enormous storms of organic traffic to their websites. They accomplish this with dozens to hundreds of tightly-focused niche articles, all reflecting high keyword value and research intelligence.

What I can tell you from my own experience is this:

1. Ads at the top of the page and on the left of the page perfom better than any other ads. (Take a look at the "heatmap" from the Google link below)

2. Ads without background colour and borders perfom better than ads within borders with background colour.

3. Ads within content pages perform better than any other ads.

4. A search box on every page gives you another chance for earning Adsense income.

5. A blue link at the top of the ad, the ad in black, and the url also in black so that it blends in with the ad copy - also tends to perform well. A black url makes the link stand out and gives you a better chance of someone clicking on it.

Experiment with your settings and see which brings you the best results. Google's reporting has become a lot better in the last month or so, so you should instantly be able to see which ads result in better CTR.

To increase your site traffic, which obviously will increase your Adsense income, the best way to get traffic is to have fresh content at your site. Write your own articles and submit it to article directories like Go Articles etc. To find more article directories, just do a search for "free article directory submissions" on a search engine like Google.

Another way would be to publish articles by other authors that are relevant to your site content. You can find free articles all over the web by once again doing a search for e.g. "free site content".

Do this on a regular basis and watch your traffic (and your income) increase.

Increasing the Average AdSense Price Per Click

Increasing the average price per click you receive from AdSense is the other strategy for increasing your overall AdSense earnings. You can do this by:

Carefully targeting your content, and/or
Filtering out and avoiding low-paying ads

Content targeting isn't just about creating relevant, unique content. It's also making sure that that content is written to target the higher-paying keywords associated with a given topic. This means:

Figuring out which keyword variations for that topic pay more. Often the more specialized variations and phrases pay more than the "generic" terms.

Ensuring that the keyword density of the content favors the higher-paying keyword variations. See the Vioxx Lawsuits page for an example of well-targeted ads due to appropriate keyword density.

And to reduce the occurrence of lower-paying ads, consider these two strategies:

Use AdSense's competitive filter mechanism to screen out the ads that you don't want.

Show fewer ads on a page. The fewer ads you show, the more the higher-paying ads get displayed and clicked.

Many publishers also report that their earnings increase if they remove ads completely from pages with few or no clicks. Again, the "less is more" strategy favors the higher-paying ads.

There's No Magic

Increasing the Number of AdSense Clicks

Increasing the number of times the ads on your site or blog are clicked is the most obvious strategy. There are two general strategies you can follow:

Increase the traffic to the site, and/or
Adjust the ads to make them more "clickable"

Getting traffic is hard and takes time, so don't look at it as a quick fix. The best way to get traffic is to provide useful, unique content and to rank highly in search engine rankings for keywords related to that content. In other words, use standard search engine optimization techniques. DO NOT "buy" traffic or use "link farms" or other dubious techniques. Other tips for getting traffic:

Publish articles, even free ones, with links back to your site.
Include a link to your site in the signature at the bottom of your emails or in any forum postings you make (if the forum allows it).

Participate in forums/groups related to the content of your site or blog. The key is to participate, not lurk, and don't just post messages promoting your site.

Add comments (relevant ones only, please) to other blogs, you can usually link back to yours. (This won't help your search engine rankings, but it may allow others who are reading those comments to find your own site.)

Syndicate your content (trivial if you have a blog) and make sure that the content is registered with syndication aggregators.

List your site in relevant directories.

What you want to do is remove the borders from your AdSense ads and match the background color of the ad to your website. Additionally, you want to match the color of the AdSense links to the rest of the links on your website plus choose an ad format that makes the ads look seamless.

For example, if your web site has a white background and the default color of your hypertext links is blue you will want to remove the border from your AdSense, make the background white, choose either a square or a rectangle as your ad format instead of a skyscraper or banner, and yep you guessed it… make the links blue.

Placement Matters:

Why should you use this function?

Well, when a website visitor chooses to use this search box from your website your AdSense ID will be imbedded in ALL of that visitors Google searches. If that person does 1 search or 50 your AdSense ID will still be imbedded throughout process.

Why is this so great?

If that visitor clicks on any of the sponsored listings while surfing from your web site guess who makes money. YOU! If they hit the back button and click on another ad guess who makes money? YOU! This is absolutely huge. Through this function you now have the ability to earn multiple click thrus from the same visitor on the site visit. Please don’t overlook how powerful this is. Besides, most of your website traffic will just be browsing anyway, so I why help them find what there looking for and make a little coin along the way?

Tracking:

Just like any other type of marketing, you won’t know what’s working the best for you on your web site unless you track the different things that you’re experimenting with. Set up a few Google AdSense channels for the different ads that you’ll be placing on your website. Then just see which channels are working the best and stick to those.

A clarification on accidental clicks

We understand that there's been some confusion surrounding our recent post about accidental clicks. Specifically, many of our publishers feel that we've been sending mixed messages about placing ads near navigation controls, particularly where site optimization is concerned.

For those of you concerned about our optimization tips, we still recommend integrating your ad units and link units with your page content or navigation, in order to offer your users relevant ads in addition to the content they normally see. Here are a few examples of acceptable implementations:

However, in some instances we've found that publishers have placed their ad units so close to interactive (clickable) content that users accidentally click on the ads instead of the site content. While this type of ad placement may not inherently violate our program policies, it could increase the risk of invalid clicks being generated on the ads, which would be in violation of our policies.

You can understand that increasing the possibility of accidental clicks on your sites is not in the best interest of users or advertisers, and we wanted to make you aware of this risk. This is why we ask that you maintain sufficient distance between your ads and any elements of your page on which users may often click. Because every site is different, we can't provide you with the exact amount of space to put between these page elements. However, we hope you understand our reasoning, and we ask you to use your best judgment so as to avoid possible accidental clicks in the future.

To help you, here's an example of an ad placement that could have a high risk of generating accidental clicks, and which we'd recommend avoiding:

Google Accounts landing soon

Spring is a time for change, when couples fall in love, the trees bloom -- and swallows and AdSense publishers both begin their migration. That's right, we've just started our first Google Account migration tests for older AdSense accounts. When you log into your account, you may be greeted by a screen like the one below, asking you to upgrade your login to a "Google Account".

We're rolling out this migration slowly, so please don't be alarmed if you don't see this wizard in your account yet. If you like the email address you're already using, in most cases you'll be able to upgrade it to a Google Account and keep the same login and password. However, if you use another email address for other Google products like Gmail and Picasaweb, you already have a Google Account and you can finally use the same login for AdSense. Please note, however, that at this time it's not possible to update your login to an email address that is already being used as a login for AdWords or another AdSense account. We're working on fixing this, and you won't be required to migrate until we do.

Finally, please keep in mind that only older AdSense accounts need to be migrated, so you may not be affected. You're also welcome to skip the migration wizard for now if you like, although this means you may miss out on some cool new features!

It's all Greek to your unpublished pages

Recently, a number of concerned publishers have let us know that they're seeing ads in foreign languages in the 'preview mode' of their HTML editors or on pages that haven't been published to the web. We'd like to reassure you that this is normal.

Before our system can display targeted ads on your pages, our crawler first needs to access your pages. While you're building your pages within your HTML editor, your page hasn't yet been crawled, so you may sometimes see less-targeted ads or even ads in foreign languages. However, after you've published a page to the web, you should start seeing ads in the appropriate language. Please also keep in mind that it can sometimes take 1 to 2 weeks for our crawler to revisit your site after you've made any changes, but your ad relevance should improve over time. As always, we appreciate your patience as the crawler continues its work.

Why the lower eCPM?

Now that site targeted and contextually targeted ads can be displayed separately in AdSense Advanced Reports, there seems to be some confusion about site targeted ads with lower eCPM। We'd like to explain why you should always feel assured that you're getting the best paying ads for your pages.

Site targeted ads compete in the same auction as contextually targeted ads. They will only appear on your site if they represent a higher eCPM than any combination of contextually targeted ads competing to display in the same ad unit. The AdWords auction process takes into account factors such as bid price and clickthrough rate in calculating Ad Rank, the ranking system determining which ads will appear on your page। Opting into site targeted ads should only improve your overall revenue potential by deepening the pool of advertisements competing to display on your sites.

So why is the eCPM associated with site targeted ads sometimes lower than the eCPM associated with contextual ads in your Advanced Reports? The answer is that site targeted ads are most likely appearing on lower performing pages within your account – in other words, pages requiring a lower eCPM to win the AdWords ad auction. For example, say your ad unit on 'PageA.com' has an eCPM of $5.00, and a combination of contextually targeted ads are displaying. Your ad unit on 'PageB.com' has an eCPM of $1.00, and a site targeted ad is displaying because it represents the highest revenue potential for this page.

If these are the only two pages on which you are displaying AdSense ads, your Advanced Reports will show an eCPM of $5.00 for contextual ads, and an eCPM of $1.00 for site targeted ads. However, all of your ad units are automatically optimized to display the highest paying ads available at that moment.

Lastly, please remember that site targeted ads pay on a cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM) basis, not on a cost-per-click (CPC) basis, so you will be paid whether or not your visitors click on them. For site targeted ads, clickthrough rate does not affect eCPM since advertisers bid on a cost-per-thousand impression basis rather than a cost-per-click basis.

Don't run the risk of click and miss

As you may know, our tips and guidelines mention that "users should only click on Google ads if they're interested in the services being advertised"। While there are many precautions a publisher can take to avoid encouraging clicks on their ads, we've found that some implementations of the ad code can lead to accidental clicks that the publisher may not have been able to predict. Some implementations that could lead to accidental clicks include placing your ads:

- In close proximity to Macromedia Flash games
- Under pop-ups or download prompts
- Near site navigation controls on your pages, such as drop-downs or menu links

Generally, we ask that you not place your ads near features of your site that your users may interact with by clicking. If your site contains elements that increase the number of ad clicks without increasing business results for the advertiser, we may consider these clicks to be invalid. "Business results" can range from an online sale to a page view. If we detect enough of these clicks and determine that the risk to our advertisers is too great, we may disable the account. To maintain compliance with our program policies and ensure that your users don't inadvertently click on the ads on your site, we strongly recommend that you move any ad units that are in close proximity to interactive site features।

At what cost revenue?

It's an oft-seen question from publishers: Are we earning revenue for ad impressions or for ad clicks? The answer is that it depends on whether cost-per-impression (CPM) ads or cost-per-click (CPC) ads are appearing on your pages. By default, CPC ads will show on your site and you'll generate earnings for valid clicks on those ads. However, your ad units will display CPM ads when advertisers bid specifically on your site using site targeting, and for those ads you'll generate earnings with each valid impression. Please keep in mind that CPM earnings are not the same as the values you see in your eCPM column; your eCPM is only a reporting feature that can help you compare ad performance।

To determine which type of ad you displayed on specific days, you can follow these instructions to generate a report। In your Advanced Reports, the ad type 'Site' refers to CPM ads, and 'Contextual' refers to CPC ads.

Want to show more CPM ads on your site? It's not possible to request CPM ads, but you can help advertisers get interested in your site by customizing your Onsite Advertiser Sign-up landing page. Advertisers can then create campaigns targeted specifically at your site, directly from your site. And don't forget to focus on quality, placement, and size -- take a look at some important tips from the AdWords team on what advertisers look for in site targeting their CPM ads।

Encouraging clicks

Many of you may remember our December post on the placement of images near ads। In that spirit, we'd like to remind you of a general policy issue: encouraging clicks.

As many of you know, our program policies prohibit any means of encouraging users to click on Google ads or bringing excessive attention to ad units। For example, sites may not contain phrases such as "click the ads," "support our sponsors," "visit these recommended links," or other similar language that could apply to the Google ads on your site. In addition, publishers are not permitted to label the Google ads with text other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements."

In light of this policy, you may be wondering if you're allowed to recommend your referral products to your users. As explained in Dan's post from February, unlike with AdSense for content ads, you can endorse your referral products by calling attention to the button or text link। If you believe in the quality of the product that you're referring, feel free to let your users know.

Generally, visitors should only click on Google ads if they're interested in the services being advertised. Encouraging them to click on your Google ads, either directly or indirectly, can lead to inflated advertiser costs -- and can cause an account to be disabled.

Everything in its place(ment)

As you may know, custom channels are a great way to track the performance of individual ad units on your pages. Starting this week, with just a few extra steps you can make your site more attractive to advertisers by allowing them to target these channels as ad placements. Creating ad placements for more visible and desirable ad locations on your site increases their value to advertisers using site targeting and encourages those advertisers to bid more.
Thanks to the feedback of publishers who helped us test out this feature early on, here are some answers to a few commonly asked questions that you may also have about ad placements:

How are ad placements different from custom channels?
Think of ad placements as 'enhanced' custom channels. To create an ad placement, you create and implement a custom channel just as you normally would. The only change is the additional step of providing attributes and an accurate description for your ad placement. On the 'Channels' page in your account, click the appropriate 'edit settings' link on the right. As you can see below, there will be a box labeled 'Targeting' on the next page which, once checked, will show this channel to advertisers as an ad placement. From there, you'll just need to provide some details on where the ad unit appears on your site:

Advertisers will see the 'External name' and 'Description' along with the domain on which that placement appears, so a meaningful name and detailed description clarifying where the ads will show can make your placement more appealing. Be sure to highlight your most valuable and best-performing ad units as placements. For example, try a description like 'Ads will appear in a 300x250 rectangle embedded within articles on the Travel section' or 'Ads will appear only in the leaderboard ad unit directly above any page on the site.'

If nobody bids on my placement, does that mean I won't get any money?
Ads that are targeted through ad placements compete in the same auction against all other ads that are eligible to appear in that space, so you'll still be able to generate earnings. For example, suppose you created a 'Homepage, Top center' placement. When we see an impression from this placement, we round up advertisers who match the content of your homepage, as well as those targeting your site and this placement and include them in an auction. We'll then display the ad which our system has determined will earn you the most money, regardless of how it was targeted.

What kind of placements should I create?
Remember that advertisers will rely on your ad placement descriptions in order to decide whether to target their ads to your site. That said, here are a few tips to get started:

If you have multiple ad units on a page, let advertisers target the high visibility ones separately

If you have a wide range of topics on your site and you think certain topics will appeal to different types of advertisers, then break them out accordingly

Break out high visibility pages such as your homepage and any above-the-fold spots.

New pricing structure for referrals

1. When a publisher who signed up for Google AdSense through your referral earns their first $5 within 180 days of sign-up, you will be credited with $5.
2. When that same publisher earns $100 within 180 days of sign-up and is eligible for payment, you will be credited with an additional $250.
3. If, in any 180-day period, you refer 25 publishers who each earn more than $100 within 180 days of their respective sign-ups and are all eligible for payout, you will be awarded a $2,000 bonus (bonus payouts are limited to 1 per year).

AdWords Referrals:

1. When an advertiser you refer spends $5 within 90 days of sign-up (in addition to the $5 sign-up fee) you will be credited with $5.
2. When that same advertiser spends $100 within 90 days of sign-up, you will be credited with an additional $40.
3. If, in any 180 day period, you refer 20 advertisers who each spend more than $100 within 90 days of their respective sign-ups, you will be awarded a $600 bonus (bonus payments are limited to 1 per year).

These rules will also apply to users that you have already referred but who have not yet reached one of the new earning/spend thresholds. For example, if you referred an AdSense publisher who has currently earned $2.00, you will be paid $5.00 if that publisher reaches the $5.00 mark. But, if you have referred an AdSense publisher who has already earned $10.00, you will not be paid $5.00 retroactively for that referral reaching the $5.00 mark. However, should that publisher eventually reach the $100.00 earnings mark within 180 days, you will be paid $250.00.

Referrals, now with Google Checkout

Today we're excited to announce that in addition to AdSense, AdWords, Firefox with Google Toolbar, and Google Pack, you can now refer your users to Google Checkout through AdSense.

Checkout gives your users a faster, safer, and more convenient way to shop online. OK, that sounds great for them, but what do you get out of it? Well, every time you refer a user to Google Checkout, you make a little money. It's a simple process that includes all of three steps:

1.You place the Checkout referral button on your site.

2.Someone clicks on the button, signs up as a buyer with Google Checkout using a valid U.S. credit card, and completes a purchase of at least $10 before shipping and tax through Checkout within 90 days. (The current $10 minimum purchase corresponds to our existing $10 promotion for new buyers, so this amount may change in the future.)

3.You earn $1.

It's that simple. Please note that Checkout referrals are currently only available for U.S. publishers, and Google Checkout is currently only available for buyers with a U.S. credit card. We hope to make both Checkout and Checkout Referrals available in more countries soon.

The AdSense API: All grown up and ready to play

If you're a web developer or host, you may remember that we introduced you to the AdSense API last May. With the AdSense API, your users can create their own AdSense accounts on your site, and display ads alongside the content that they have created. They can also manage their accounts and view ad performance and earnings reports, all on your site.
In addition, you can enhance your customers' user experience by helping them to make money from their content and by giving them the ability to perform many AdSense functions without ever leaving your site. For example, they can:
1. Create and manage AdSense accounts
2. Customize and implement AdSense for content ad units and link units, AdSense for search boxes, and referrals for products such as Google AdWords and Firefox
3. Generate URL and custom channel reports
Best of all, you get to make money with the AdSense API through the Revenue Sharing program. Advertisers pay your users and you when visitors click on your users' ads. Plus, you can earn Referral Payments when your users earn threshold amounts within their first 180 days after sign up.
Today, we're pleased to announce that the AdSense API is now open for all developers, with the release of our open development sandbox. We're happy to let you know that this is your personal inbox where we'll send you customized optimization tips. More specifically, our system will automatically analyze your account and ad settings. Based on these findings, you'll receive a notification each month in your AdSense account if there are changes you can make to improve your overall AdSense performance.

While we're not able to guarantee results from implementing these suggestions, we've found that these techniques have been successful for many publishers in the past which is why we've developed this feature for you. If you don't receive a notification during a specific month, don't worry. You've probably implemented all of our current suggestions and we'll be adding more tips in the future.

A fresh, new look for AdSense ads

You may have noticed that some of your ad units have started to look a little different lately -- we’re happy to announce that, just in time for spring, we've given our standard ad units a fresh makeover. After extensive testing and research, we’ve found that the new formats are not only visually appealing to users, but they also perform even better for publishers and advertisers. We're in the process of rolling out this change to all ad units, and you should see that your ad units are automatically updated over the next few days. But, before you rush to make sure all of your ad units still match your site, please be assured that the fonts and colors of your ads won't be changed.

Although it’s not possible to opt out of the new designs, we hope that you and your site visitors will find our new ad formats clearer and more attractive. We're always testing new ways to improve the look and feel of our advertisements, so stay tuned for more format options in the future.

This website was designed to help advertisers choose keywords to bid on but as a publisher you can use this tool to find out the best keywords to not only build your site around but to use in content.

1. When you visit the above website you will notice two tabs the Keyword Variations tab and the site-related keywords tab. Choose the Keyword variations tab.

2. Type in a keyword or keyword phrase. Make sure you uncheck the synonyms box. This will insure that you do a vertical brainstorm. The keyword that triggers any brainstorm is called a brainstorm seed word because it seeds a storm of keywords. In other words you will get a list of keywords and keyword phrases that contain your chosen keyword. By checking the box you get a lateral brainstorm. This gives keywords that are related to the seed word but do not contain the seed word. Make sure you uncheck the synonyms box.

3. Where it says “choose data to display:” choose cost and ad position estimates. Choose a number that you would never bid on such as $100 and then click “recalculate”. This will give you a list of keywords along with the cost per click that advertisers are paying for the number one spot for those keywords. The number one spot for cash settlement for example costs about fifty dollars. You now know that cash settlement is a high paying keyword.

By knowing what keywords are getting the highest bid you can estimate what keywords to integrate into content for your website or blog. It Makes Sense to Add AdSense to Your Blog

The code for AdSense can be placed on any of your web pages. I think placing it on your blog will give you distinct advantage because blogs have several points in their favor. They are easily indexed by search engines. Recently two of my simple blogs were indexed by Google within 2-3 days of submission of URL's which I think is quite fast. With Yahoo! it is even easier - just add the URL of your blog to your My Yahoo page and Yahoo! will start accessing it immediately. GoogleAlert is a free tool that can be used to know when your blog is indexed by Google.

You can have your blog up and running in minutes free of cost from several sites that provide this service. I personally use blogger.com. With blogs you do not need to worry about designing websites, registering domain name or hiring web site hosting service. You simply write your content on the blog and it is ready for publication.

With AdSense wide range of options is available - number of ads for display, shape and size of display, color schemes. More than 200 colors are available from which you can choose color for border, background and text. 24 pre-set color palettes are readily available; in addition you can have your own custom-palette to match with the appearance of your web page. Similarly, color schemes are available for Google search bar.

When the web page is opened, Google ads are placed which match with the content of the page and are highly relevant. Google finds right ads for the web page from 100,000 AdWord advertisers.

Several options are available for the ads that you would like to be displayed on your page. Ad filters can be activated which will block up to 200 URL's of your choice which you do not want to show on your page. You may like to filter away ads from your competitors. Adsense New pricing structure for referrals

Last year we asked you for your feedback on referrals, and one of the issues we heard quite frequently was that it was too difficult to generate revenue with AdSense and AdWords referrals. To address this, we've just introduced a new pricing structure for both programs, which will be as follows:

AdSense Referrals:

When a publisher who signed up for Google AdSense through your referral earns their first $5 within 180 days of sign-up, you will be credited with $5.

When that same publisher earns $100 within 180 days of sign-up and is eligible for payment, you will be credited with an additional $250.

If, in any 180-day period, you refer 25 publishers who each earn more than $100 within 180 days of their respective sign-ups and are all eligible for payout, you will be awarded a $2,000 bonus (bonus payouts are limited to 1 per year).

AdWords Referrals:

When an advertiser you refer spends $5 within 90 days of sign-up (in addition to the $5 sign-up fee) you will be credited with $5.

When that same advertiser spends $100 within 90 days of sign-up, you will be credited with an additional $40.

If, in any 180 day period, you refer 20 advertisers who each spend more than $100 within 90 days of their respective sign-ups, you will be awarded a $600 bonus (bonus payments are limited to 1 per year).

These rules will also apply to users that you have already referred but who have not yet reached one of the new earning/spend thresholds. For example, if you referred an AdSense publisher who has currently earned $2.00, you will be paid $5.00 if that publisher reaches the $5.00 mark. But, if you have referred an AdSense publisher who has already earned $10.00, you will not be paid $5.00 retroactively for that referral reaching the $5.00 mark. However, should that publisher eventually reach the $100.00 earnings mark within 180 days, you will be paid $250.00.

Finally, please keep in mind that publishers may not click on their own referral ads and will not be paid for referring themselves for any product. For more information about referrals, please visit our Help Center.

AdSense Stats and Performance 101

As more and more people are getting into the AdSense game, there seem to be many questions asked again and again by the newcomers. Here, I have compiled detailed explanations to some common AdSense terms, facts, and performance tips.

Terminology

Real Stats (Figures based on actual performance tracking updated several times a day)
Page Impressions: The number of times an ad unit (a collection of 1 to 4 ads). If you have two ad units on a page, then every time the page loads you get two page impressions. Page Impressions DO include PSA (Public Service Ads) and Alternate Ads.
Clicks: The number of times someone clicks on an ad. Clicks on PSA will be included in this stat as well.
Earnings: Money you’ve made.

Derived Stats (Figures calculated from the real stats)
Clickthrough Rate: Clicks/Page Impressions. It is expressed as a percentage.
Effective CPM:. Earnings per thousand page impressions. Calculated by 1000 X Earnings / Page Impressions
EPC: Your EPC is not displayed because it does not really matter. EPC stands for Earnings Per Click (Earnings/Clicks) and is frequently talked about.

Facts 1. Stats Update Frequency/Delay: Although AdSense stats usually updates every couple hours, you don’t need to panic at all if you see no change in your stats for over 12 hours. Even if other webmasters are seeing normal updates.

2. Don’t worry about anomalies in your stats during the course of the day. These are not accurate. There could be delays in the update due to one reason or another. Only when you see figures for a new day can you know that the figures for the previous day are not going to change any more.

3. Sometimes the stats are carried forward several days. This happens when Google decides to freeze your clicks and earnings for fraud checking/tracking purposes or server delays. Thus, you may notice your earnings/clicks shoot straight up when you least expect it. It is possible for your CTR to go up by as much as 10% and your CPM to raise $200 over the normal.

4. The update on the different stats are not synchronized. For example, when you check your account, the page impressions may be freshed updated, while the clicks and earnings are from two hours ago. Thus, there may be a sharp drop/increase in the derived stats. Due to this, you don’t need to fret over all these little bumps.

5. Often delays in updates foreshadow changes to the AdSense program. For example, slow updates preceded introduction of channels, TOS changes, and addition of new languages.

6. Channels are a great way for you to track the performance of your ad on a particular page/site. If you want to use the same code for all of your pages, you can also use the recently added URL channels. Of course, channel data are delayed by two days.

Performance Tips

1. EPC doesn’t matter! That is because you have absolutely no control over your EPC. Your EPC is influenced by many variables including your webpage content, advertiser’s budget, seasonal fluctuations and more. Thus, the productive thing to do is concentrate on the factors that you have control over such as CTR and page impressions.

2. How am I doing?
Many of us probably wonder how we are doing compared to other AdSense users, including myself. However, we really can’t get a good sense of the average if Google doesn't disclose their figures, which they don’t. Since people doing well with AdSense generally don’t like to reveal their earnings due to the fear that they may be terminated by the program, any discussion about an average EPC/CTR/CPM is a waste of time.

3. From various experiments by myself and other webmasters, we can conclude (at least for now) that using image/text ads instead of just text ads will dramatically decrease you CTR because of various reasons. (i.e. fewer advertisers, banner blindness etc.) However, the EPC is usually slightly higher.

4. Blend in or stand out? This is completely site dependent. Sometimes, people will never click on your ads unless you “trick” them into doing so, although this is not so good for long term. Other sites will require your ad to scream in your visitor’s face to get good clicks. Do some extensive testing to find out what’s good for your site.

5. Make good use of the URL filter feature. Blocking repetitive (eBay ads) or boring ads (free smilies) will definitely increase your CTR.

6. Large rectangles placed above the fold will often generate most revenue. However, this may not be a good long term solution since such and ad is usually obstrusive and have little aesthetic value.

7. If you run a forum site, you may notice that your earnings are very low. Here is a solution: use a simple cookie-based php script that only displays AdSense ads once every 10 page views -- essentially a counter counts down from 10 to 0 and on 0 displays an AdSense block. Between the AdSense ads, display regular banner ads. Although your AdSense page impressions may be down, you will notice your CTR skyrocketing, and a large increase in overall earnings.

In conclusion: Play around with your ad to maximize your performance, and look at the big picture in your stats!

Optimization for misspelled words

Optimizing a website for misspelled words is often recommended by many people within the search engine optimization SEO community. The concept is to capture the searchers who enter incorrectly spelled words into the search engine's interface search box. The theory is based on creating the wrong spelling, and placing it deliberately on your blog or static website. Theoretically, the pseudo-word will rank at the top of the Google search results, and receive a bonus visitor.

I do not share this SEO opinion; nor do I recommend spelling words incorrectly on a website or blog. The practice does more harm than good. It should be avoided by website owners and bloggers who want to establish a reputation for trustworthiness and professionalism.

The reasons provided by some SEO professionals for utilizing, what could be euphimistically called alternative spellings, are usually presented with good intentions. Of course, as with so many other well intended ideas, the practice doesn't match the theory. In fact, the very reasons for using misspelled words in the first place, are the reasons I don't recommend them at all. They do much more damage to a website than can be countered by any perceived benefits.

SEO theory: Incorrect spellings

The reasons for misspelling words on websites seem reasonable on the surface. In fact, some boosts in traffic can be measured as a direct result of the intentional errors. As with many statistics, the visitor traffic log can be a misleading metric if used improperly. In the case of spelling errors, the visitor traffic might not be of any value at all. It might even be harmful to your company reputation.

Let's examine why incorrect spellings are given such serious consideration as search engine tools.

It's well known that people type wrong letters when making a search query in Google. Instead of the standard and expected spelling, letters are often reversed in a transposition error, letters omitted entirely, frequently misspelled words, or letters adjacent on the keyboard are substituted by mistake. The theory holds that these are searchers who could be captured by way of the spelling error. Instead of losing those people to other sites, say these experts, they arrive at your site from ranking highly for the spelling mistake.

Making Google Adsense Pay

Are you earning a lot from Google Adsense? Google adsense does pay but it is vitally important to weigh up a few factors before proceeding. Find out what you need to know.........

From what I am reading in online forums and discussion boards, Google adsense is still ruling the roost, in terms of popularity, for those wanting to start earning money from home.
I personally, have Google adsense ads on most of my websites and I find that even with the lowest of daily impressions an income can be earned. Ok you won't make a fortune with a few hits per day but if you are constantly building websites and optimizing them for adsense then the income can REALLY add up.

A few of my most recent websites are only getting 10-20 impressions per day but really high click through rates. Some days I can earn $2-$3 per site for a couple of clickthroughs from these low traffic sites. This denotes HIGH interest from advertisers paying big bucks to Google for certain keywords.

Unbelievably, many entrepreneurs are earning six figure incomes per month from adsense revenue alone.

The smart earners are building site after site then building out the ones that show potential.

The idea is to set up sites in relatively unknown markets but also balanced with some interest in the advertising field. For instance, if you choose a niche with little or no interest from advertisers then the income will reflect this lack of interest, ie. no one will be paying google for advertising in your niche or they will be paying very little and you will earn pittance per click thru.

One site of mine in an obscure niche gets hundreds of unique visitors per day and loads of adsense clickthrus, yet the income is only a dollar or two daily. This tells me that advertisers are paying very little, probably in and around 10 cents, for keywords in my niche.

At the other end of the spectrum you DO NOT want to choose a niche with so much competition that you cannot get any traffic at all. The "work at home", "home business", "internet marketing" niches are not good examples for a newcomer to make money from Google adsense. The competition is just too great. If you DO already have an established home business site then by all means add some adsense ads to your site.

Like everything else I have done online I have learnt through trial and error, Google adsense has been no different. If you don't put the ads out there then you will never know the potential.

I do get some clickthrus from my home business sites and the click thru rates can be anything from 10-15 cents to $1-2. Not bad!Google adsense is definitely here to stay for the forseeable future and we can all see why. If you have any vision at all you can see the potential in earning from Google adsense and exactly why it has become so popular.

The AdSense Formula for Making Money

I often get asked what the secret is to making money with Google's AdSense program. This often comes from people who are dreaming of setting up websites chock full of high-paying keywords for particular niche subjects and then sitting back and watching the money roll in. "What's the magic formula?" they ask me. If they're non-technical, I point them straight to my first AdSense book, Make Easy Money with Google, and assure them that they'll learn everything they need from it. They may think it's hard, but it's not.

But what about the technical people? By this I mean the people who've already set up a blog or website, who have registered domain names, who are comfortable with basic Internet terminology and concepts. What is the "AdSense formula"?

The only AdSense formula that you need to know is this:

earnings = number of clicks * average price per click

This is what I call the Fundamental AdSense Formula because you can derive almost every AdSense "secret" directly or indirectly from this formula. Do you want to earn more with AdSense? You have two ways of doing it:

Increase the number of clicks, and/or
Increase the average price per click

Your earnings will only go up if you do one or the other, and ideally both. It's an obvious formula, yes, but it's amazing how many people lose sight of it in their quest for increased AdSense earnings.

Increasing the Number of AdSense Clicks

Increasing the number of times the ads on your site or blog are clicked is the most obvious strategy. There are two general strategies you can follow:

Increase the traffic to the site, and/or
Adjust the ads to make them more "clickable"

Getting traffic is hard and takes time, so don't look at it as a quick fix. The best way to get traffic is to provide useful, unique content and to rank highly in search engine rankings for keywords related to that content. In other words, use standard search engine optimization techniques. DO NOT "buy" traffic or use "link farms" or other dubious techniques. Other tips for getting traffic:

Publish articles, even free ones, with links back to your site.
Include a link to your site in the signature at the bottom of your emails or in any forum postings you make (if the forum allows it).
Participate in forums/groups related to the content of your site or blog. The key is to participate, not lurk, and don't just post messages promoting your site.
Add comments (relevant ones only, please) to other blogs, you can usually link back to yours. (This won't help your search engine rankings, but it may allow others who are reading those comments to find your own site.)
Syndicate your content (trivial if you have a blog) and make sure that the content is registered with syndication aggregators.
List your site in relevant directories.

Adjusting the ads is something you can do almost immediately:

Position the ads on the page in order to make them more noticeable. Google even publishes a helpful heat map for AdSense publishers.
Choose the best AdSense ad format that works for your site.
Change the ad colors either to make the ads blend in with your site or to make them stand out. Again, it varies depending on the site.

Some adsense sites are performing well and others just exist in the abyss of cyberspace. Make sure your adsense site is the successful one and keep it out of the abyss.

What does make Adsense work – there are as many ideas as there are theories. Some maintain it is the placement of the ad on the page, some say integrate it into the page and it must have the look and feel of the webpage. It should be at the top and in this format and so the secrets continue.
There is only one real secret to adsense success; it is nothing more than traffic. Without substantial traffic your adsense pages will not make you money. There is proof of this statement, just look at the click through rate that you are receiving on your current pages and you will immediately notice that it takes a lot of visitors to generate a click.

If things go really well you could have as high as a fifty percent and upwards CTR. This is possible, has been done and proven, but it won't just happen on any old page.

Placement of the ad does play a role but it is not so big as many would like you to believe. Information on the best placement of adsense code on your page is no secret and is free information on Google. It is called a heat map and will show you exactly where to place your ads for maximum exposure and CTR.

The problem with most adsense driven sites is exactly that, they are adsense driven. Nobody nowadays seem to care about the visitor landing on the page, they have just become click machines supposed to make you money. According to most adsense sites they are there for you and not the other way around. No second thought is given to the surfing experience of the visitor.

You have been made to believe that you need a multitude of sites and use all sorts of templates and secret positioning tactics for maximum income. So every second would be adsense millionaire is putting up thousands of crappy pages all over the internet to get those adsense clicks that will elevate them to the illusive four and five figure adsense earners. They tend to forget the internet marketplace is probably the most dynamic market there is, and changes every day. Certain elements of course remain the same but you have to be able to broaden your thinking and think out of the box sometimes.

Let's go back to the least important person for most adsense publishers, the visitor to the page. These poor souls land on your pages either through generic or PPC traffic. Either way you have the possibility that they might be clicking on one of your adsense links. The only driving force for the visitor to click your link is he found the information on your page that related to his search, and after going through your page he will click on one of your links in adsense to further his search.

Now adsense displays relevant ads on your page based on the content of the page. If the visitor is not finding what they are looking for how on earth do you expect adsense to find related content ads to place on your page.

By taking your visitor into account and actually providing for them you are also insuring for yourself that the correct adsense ads will be displaying on your pages, and hence will deliver a good CTR. Just putting up one thousand new pages with some template or other automatic page creating device will certainly not hit the mark.

You would most probably be much better off with ten well designed and optimized pages, not only for the search engines but for your visitors, and you might then really be able to ensure a profitable adsense campaign.

Step by step SEO: Chapter 5

Some search engines will allow you to submit (to replace or add a page to the index) a URL once every day and changes are usually live quickly (faster than other search engines), so use the search engine with the fastest indexing process to 'debug' your keywords and Search Engine Optimization tactics. Unfortunately this submission cycle varies, so you might need to submit pages to all major engines, but certainly not all 200 search engines. It is important to understand that the time it takes for a search engine to actually respond to a submission and to place you into their index varies greatly day-to-day. Search engine indexing was once a matter of hours, and now is weeks. You would be wise to consider submission to other engines as well to cover your bases. How search engines work is a wondrous thing, and every engine is different.

Once you have selected your major keywords, add the main words to your TITLE string, your META description string, your META keywords string, ALT tags (image tag parameter), and especially imbed them into your top-of-page displayed content. Try to use as many keywords as grammar will allow in your opening few sentences since this sets the topic for the page and contributes to the theme of the site.

Keyword tuning is an iterative loop (you keep doing it) until you rank reasonably well on several search engines. At that point you at least have the right words and a reasonable META keyword tag. But some search engines use different strings to determine keywords and their algorithms downplay or ignore META tags. These search engines extract keywords from the content on your page, so you need to place your best search words throughout the displayed content for your page. An example (grossly oversimplified) would be:

Note: If you are not "programming" the design of your own web site and are not familiar with how to add HTML code, please contact your web designer and request that they add these commands.

Hint: some search engines ignore content in comment blocks, but some other engines may process this content. Also, some engines processes ALT text for your images as keyword text as long as you do not spam these areas. However, at least one search engine has added indexing logic to consider the exact (or long-string) duplication of substantial portions of your keyword list in this fashion as spamming, and your entries will be removed within a week of their addition. To get around this, reword your keyword list to read as sentences, and place them in content appropriate to the page.Once the same words are in your META title, description and keywords, and also in other text (Alt and comments) and displayed content, and you are satisfied with your results, and only then, is it appropriate to submit your URL's to each major search engine. We suggest that you pace your search engine submissions, adding only up to five pages per day per site as a maximum, and not doing submission more than two or three times per week. As a result, performing the above add requests as scheduled will allow you to remain within the acceptable range for most search engines.

Hint: the engines will regularly discard search engine submissions without processing them. By resubmitting you have a higher probability of having one of your submissions "take". Also, some indexes appear to give preference to "fresh" submissions as determined by the date of last update and the last submission date. So you should update your site often following prescribed Search Engine Optimization tactics and resubmit at least twice per month.

Allow two to four weeks for each search engine submission to be indexed in each major search engine. If you do not show up (as is common), then resubmit. If you continue to miss the search engine rankings results you desire, then go back and review your keyword usage, either increasing or decreasing frequency until you have the desired results. Suggestion: on the Yahoo directory, register regionally instead of nationally (they will add you everywhere as well, but you get registered much quicker regionally), and on the others, register frequently until you are listed. Your ratings in the organic search results appear to be affected and while Yahoo is changing this is still a good move.

You are about to discover your real issue... you have insufficient or weak content. It takes a lot of words to convince a search engine that you are a subject matter expert. Also, most sites use images to relay their message to humans, but are now discovering that search engines are blind and do not see images. Or the site content comes from a data base and the data base has
little unique content. Or the site accepts feeds from other expert sites but
this makes all of their content someone else's, and they either get no
credit for it or are penalized for duplicate content. In any case, the
design and content on your web site may very well need to be restructured
and expanded. [If this is not you, buy yourself a drink -- you have earned
it!] Avoid mistakes, use clean optimized graphics and do it right, minimize
the use of flash, avoid pop-up windows, restrict the scope of forms except
where really needed, make JavaScript and css files external to the source
code, always use a site map, solve obvious problems first, and by all means
keep it simple. Web page layout problems really hurt SEO projects.

Even if tags are ignored today, it only takes a few minutes to do it right,
you would never be penalized for having them (unless you spam), and not all
engines will ignore them and maybe not forever.

You can never go wrong by using meta tags, and only hurt yourself if you
don't use them.

You must also unconditionally, absolutely, positively have keywords (and
certainly sufficient content containing them) throughout your body section.

We recommend that you have at least 400 words of clean sentence-structure
grammatically correct content on every page. You must also have your
keywords appear as the the most common (without excess) phrases on your
pages. In many cases there are ways to do this that work well for whatever
your page format or content, all of which is customized to the look-and-feel
of the site and the nature of the content.

And you also need to link pages together using the keywords of the landing
page in the anchor text of the sending page. This is a must... use text
links within paragraphs when possible, especially when the pages are
related. If the topics are not related, then use image links so the search
engines do not see the text and get confused.

And never, ever create doorway pages, or information pages, or hallway
pages, or whatever they are called today. Spam by any other name is still
spam. If you cannot make the real page into a subject matter expert, then
hire someone that can. But do not try to make a pig fly!

Step by step SEO: Chapter 3

You will end up with hundreds of words that you should sort by your perceived descending order of importance (how likely it is that they will be used by visitors as search words). If uncertain, leave them in the order used by the highest rated pages. Be sure to identify two-word or three-word phrases if used, or if applicable. It is also important that you add words to help clarify the use of your keywords. For instance "capital" might have very different meanings -- such as intellectual capital, state capital, capital letters, venture capital, etc. So a keyword or two that helps the index builders learn the context of your keywords will help raise your search engine rankings. Hint: each keyword in your META tags must also appear within your content to avoid spamming penalties. Also, consider common misspellings as additions to your keyword lists.

Once you have your personal list, validate each phrase for popularity as a search term. There are several tools that are free that allow you to get a glimpse of the usage of various words and phrases. The most popular free keyword suggestion tool is offered by Overture and it is very popular. The best tool for determining what stemmed word is commonly used is Word tracker. It is so good that we recommend it to our clients in our SEO training courses. The results will indicate what terms generate the most searches, thus those are the most important terms (if they are appropriate to your page). Properly done, you might end up with as few as ten or as many as a hundred major keywords. If you add all of the words it will dilute the importance of each keyword, so select well. In general, you will have a hard time keeping the keyword analysis list short if you include plurals and various combinations of words to maximize your frequency counts. Duplicate content is a very bad thing, and it can cause site-wide penalties. Hint: Be very careful not to replicate content on other URL's, and if it happens (as with affiliate sites) you have a serious problem. Duplicate content is a real problem when doing SEO. Also, repeating your keywords in the content, as long as it is within a reasonable sentence construct and has appropriate context, will not be considered spamming. A search engine usually cares about spamming outside of the standard sentence construct when reviewing content instead of sentence spamming issues. Using exotic "hidden" text techniques will usually have you eliminated, so avoid them when possible.

If you find that there are no META keywords in the site, the chances are that the site is using a server technique designed to hide keywords (such as server side includes), such server scripts submit alternate pages when a specific search engine looks for the page. These stealth CGI scripts were designed to offer content to the search engine that is exceptionally keyword loaded in an attempt to bias the spider into a higher ranking position, or both. "Some people submit pages that present our spider with content that differs from what browsers will see. We strongly discourage the use of these techniques." - AltaVista Spamming Restrictions

Or perhaps the site author indexed then subsequently uploaded a keyword-less page to keep you from figuring out how to beat them with their own keywords. I do not recommend that you try this on your site because, in most cases, anybody can resubmit your URL, thus your site will drop from the search ranking results. As a housekeeping matter, the search engine will eventually revisit and reload registered sites without owner knowledge in order to purge deleted pages or to address spamming, so these sites will eventually vanish anyhow. Hint: the META tag "keywords" may work for some search engines (like Yahoo!) while Google and many others emphasize content and titles. As a result, it is important to have the most common words also appear at the top and throughout your site if it can be done without hurting the appeal of the site. If the search is for "search engine advice", put that string in the title, keywords, and top-of-page content.

AdSense on the same page as other contextual ad programs

When Google updated their AdSense policies this week, there was a lot of confusion about the removal of the a certain part of the competitive ad policy, namely the one that saw the removal of the following:

We do not permit Google ads or search boxes accessing Google search services to be published on web pages that also contain what could be considered competing ads or services. If you have elected to receive contextually-targeted Google ads, this would include all other contextually-targeted ads or links on the same page as Google ads.

Yet, as I posted yesterday, its removal from the policy pages did not mean much in itself, as the AdSense terms still included a clause (If You have elected to receive content or Site-based Ads, You further agree not to display on any Serviced Page any non-Google content-targeted advertisement(s).) that would prevent other contextual ads on the same page.

I followed up with Google on the situation, to find out of the removal of the clause would mean that competitor's ads would be allowed on the same page as AdSense, provided they didn't resemble or mimic AdSense ads, and that the AdSense terms would eventually be updated to reflect this policy change. And the answer is yes!

I spoke with Brian Axe, senior product manager on the Google AdSense Team on the issue. "As you and others have noticed, the AdSense Terms and Conditions haven't been updated since 2005, and we're working on an update to the Terms to bring everything into line. Traditionally, we don't update the Terms as frequently, since all publishers must re-agree to the Terms whenever they change."

"When it comes to enforcing policies on third-party contextual ads, we'll be following the updated program policies instead of the T&Cs on this point. That is to say, publishers may now display other contextual ads on the same site or page as Google ads as long as they don't have the same look and feel as our ads," Brian Axe tells Jennifer Slegg of JenSense.

So what does this mean for AdSense publishers? Well, it depends what you want to use with it. Using Yahoo Pubisher Network is still a no go, because the YPN terms still contain a clause (For any webpage or RSS feed that includes the Ad Code, you agree not to display or link to any other advertising (including but not limited to any listing) that is mapped to or responds to the content of the Ad Page) preventing publishers from using another contextual ad network on the same page as YPN ads. However, I am following up with Yahoo on this issue to find out if they will be loosening this clause now or in the future to permit AdSense and YPN to run on the same page. I will update you on this issue if I get information about whether or not YPN will decide to do this.

However IntelliTXT is one I get plenty of questions on, and publishers can definitely run IntelliTXT with AdSense, provided the pop-up does not either mimic AdSense ads or obscure any AdSense ad units running on the same page.

And any other contextual ads are now fine to run, provided their own terms do allow other contextual ads on the same page, and they do not mimic the AdSense ad units on the page you currently run.

How can you ensure they aren't mimicking your AdSense? If you are using the border-less technique, the simplest solution is to add a border or change the background color of the competitor's ad unit. It is still unclear just how much of the text within a blended ad unit (an ad unit that matches the border and background to the background of the webpage) would have to be changed, but I would guess all three elements would need changing, the colors of the title, description text and the URL. So it is obviously easier to just throw up a different border or background on to the ad unit to make its appearance substantially different from your AdSense ad unit. The you can work on tweaking it later without borders once we get more confirmation on just how much of the text color needs to be changed within an ad unit to ensure you are not breaking AdSense policies. And of course, you can always contact Google support on this issue to ensure that your competitive ad units are different enough to satisfy the AdSense compliancy team.

All in all, this change is good because it does allow publishers to use competitive ad products on the same page as AdSense, something that was previously not allowed under the program policies. You just simply need to ensure that any other ads you use (whether contextually targeted or not) do not resemble the AdSense ads you run anywhere on that same site.

Update: I spoke with Yahoo Publisher Network on this issue, and they say that as of today, page level exclusivity still exists. This means you still cannot run YPN on the same page as another contextual ad network. However, they will listen to publisher feedback on this issue and take it into consideration for future YPN terms updates.

Update 2: I have had a few questions regarding whether using the same ad unit sizes would constitute having the "same look and feel", and some others are reporting that using anything in an ad unit in the same style as Google's (such as using something that looks like YPN) would violate this policy. Fortunately for publishers, the answer is no, just the fact the ad units share the same styling (as nearly all contextual ad networks do) will not break the policy as long as you take care to change the color schemes used by each.

Botton line, this means you can use the same ad unit sizes from two different programs, as long as there are clear differences in the color scheme (and things such as borders or backgrounds) used by your Google ads. It is also worth noting thaty proximity of the competitive ad units to each other also comes into factor when making changes to your site by adding competitive ads. I asked Brian Axe from AdSense to clear up just how different the ad units need to be so publishers do not inadvertantly violate the policy.

""We're asking that publishers use good judgment on how much they change the colors or formatting of the ads to ensure users don't confuse third-party ads with Google ads. Proximity plays a role as well - if you're placing the ad units directly adjacent to one another, we'd ask that you use clear borders and offsetting colors to indicate where one network's ad unit ends and the other begins. If the ad units are on opposite sides of the page, using different backgrounds colors and/or a different color scheme for ad text and borders should be fine. Ad units that are virtually indistinguishable from the Google ads on a site would certainly violate the spirit of this policy," Brian says.

Would you like to make one tiny addition to your web pages and increase the chances of getting the AdSense ads clicked by up to three times?

It's laughingly simple, yet the effect can be immediate.

All you need is to get some colorful digital photographs, either from your own stock or from a royalty free web site. Then using a graphics program, such as Real Draw PRO or Photoshop, create a strip of four rectangular photographs with a space in between each. The overall size of the strip should be 728 pixels wide by about 108 pixels deep. The size of the pictures should be about 140 pixels wide by whatever depth you choose for the picture strip.

The content of the pictures should be relevant to the content of your web site. In order not to violate Google's Terms Of Service, you should avoid pictures that are animated, advertisements or induce the visitor to click on the AdSense ads. If you are in any doubt, take a look at the ads on my web site or check with Google's Terms Of Service.

The background color should exactly match the color of your AdSense pages. It helps if you can place a narrow blue border around the individual photo (but not around the entire strip). This arrangement is ideal for a page containing an article and the best position within the page for the picture strip is at the top of the page, immediately below the page headline, but above the start of the body text.

Once you have done this, go to your Google AdSense advert codes and select the one for leaderboard, which is 728 pixels wide by 90 pixels deep. If the 728 pixel width sounds vaguely familiar, it's the exact width of your picture strip. Make sure you delete the border before pasting your leaderboard code under the picture strip, save the page and load it to your server and start enjoying up to three times the clicks on that style of ad.

If you already have the maximum number of three AdSense blocks on the pages, where you insert this picture strip/leaderboard combo, do be sure to delete one of the existing ad groups, so you don't violate Google's Terms Of Service, which only allow three ad blocks per page.

How Not to Get the Dreaded Termination Email from Google

Recently Google went on a banning spree. Hundreds, possibly thousands of webmasters got a short email from Google’s Adsense department informing them of their account’s termination. One only has to look through any popular webmaster message boards and tales of woe abound from those cast off the island.

The cleaning up of the Adsense publisher base seems to have given rise to alternate Adsense programs. Some of these, while boasting better payouts, might not have the same ad quality as Adsense. If you’re no longer a part of Adsense or just want to try something new, you can find some of these alternates in a downloadable format on my site or on the web by searching.

There are ways to prevent your account being terminated. One should always familiarize themselves with Adsense TOS (Terms of Service) and send Google and email on any situations you’re unsure about. Some of the better known ways to avoid termination are:

* Check your server logs frequently for any abnormal activity. If you’re using cPanel, I recommend AWstats. Looks for abnormal spikes in traffic on days and compare against your CTR on Adsense. Anything that looks fishy ask Google to investigate. You might want to offer the use of your server logs for their investigation at the same time.

* Use monitoring software to track clicks on your site. You can get this free by searching online. There are a few out there. I’ll compile a list of the more popular ones in a later entry. You can use this to help Google get rid of click fraud by catching suspicious activity first and reporting it to them.

* Don’t click on your own ads or encourage others to do the same. Goes without saying. Also avoid checking your Adsense account on public machines or from behind a proxy with any number of users. Should another user on a public machine click on your ads then it registers as an owner click since the IPs are the same. Same goes for machines behind a proxy. Lets say you work in a company with a few hundred users and have an internal network. In all likelihood the external IPs are a small range. This means that Google will see only the IP addresses that are assigned by the company’s service provider. If anyone else on that network clicks on your ads, you stand a chance of being banned as Google will see the clicks coming from the same place.

* Don’t put Adsense ads on empty pages or with adult or gambling content. Again, self explanatory. Google will catch you sooner than you think. Just remember, their technology can display ads based on your content. If your content is against their TOS, you’re gone. This also includes having their ads on pup-ups or pop-unders, be careful with this one if you’re purchasing traffic. Use of artificial means of traffic generation such as traffic exchanges will get you kicked out. Some successful blog owners have suggested using traffic exchanges before putting Adsense on your site. This way you get some exposure and maybe some repeat vistors before you implement Adsense.

* If you make a mistake. Let them know. If its really an honest mistake and you haven’t been clicking on your own ads for a while then you should be able to get a reprieve. Its easier than asking for reinstatement.

To close, these are just some points to follow. Google can change their TOS at anytime and they do seem to ban people in certain periods more heavily. Some say near the 15th which is their payout date. Keep your nose clean and you should be able to continue making Adsense work for you.

As an affiliate marketer, you can make money without having a website of your own. You don't have to create a mailing list, newsletter, write articles and custom content, or anything else for that matter.

Making money with affiliate programs is as simple as advertising. That's it. If you can drive traffic to an affiliate product through your affiliate link, you can make money.

This is usually done using the Google AdWords system. You place ads on Google, and you pay only for clicks on those ads.

Now of course there's a lot more to it than that. Advertising on Google can be complicated, frustrating, and expensive if not done right. It takes a lot of trial and error usually too.

One of the first questions new affiliate have is "How can I advertise without a website?" Well the answer to that is simple. When you sign up for an affiliate program, you're given a special tracking URL, or website address. This URL is what the affiliate program uses to know when you've sent traffic to them, and when you've made sales and earned commissions.

The Google AdWords system allows you to use that affiliate URL in your advertisements. There are a couple of minor rules you have to follow. One of these rules says you must have some indication in your ad that you're using an affiliate link. This can be done by simply putting "aff" or "affiliate" at the end of your ad.

You don't want to use your affiliate link for the display URL though. Put the affiliate link into the destination URL of your Google advertisement, then put the main affiliate site address into the display section. This way you have a nice looking, relevant display link showing, and this helps make your ads more appealing to searchers.

Google does have certain rules about using affiliate links in your ads though. Primarily, they don't want pages stuffed full of affiliate links. So their system is designed to only show one at a time. If you're the only affiliate advertising a certain product, then your ad will be displayed as often as possible. If however, there are 5 other people advertising the same affiliate program AND using their direct affiliate link, Google will rotate your ad with theirs.

Because of this rotation rule, your ads may not be displayed as often and of course it may take longer for you to drive enough traffic to the affiliate site and make sales. This is a fine tradeoff when you're first starting out though, particularly if you don't have a website and don't know how to get one started.

When you use Google Adwords and can’t be certain of what keyword matching option you must use, then you can enter all three variations you have in your keywords list. For instance:

After using them for some time you can check the clickthrough rates of the keywords and delete the ineffective keyword combinations.

Always use the negative keywords feature. For example if someone uses the search term “free art posters” then you should use the negative keyword –free in the Google appropriate field and in result your keyword “Art Poster” will not be displayed.

By doing that you avoid the freebie seekers who are not targeted in your offer and as result you improve your clickthrough rates and reduce the cost of your campaigns. You can also use similar with the “free” term such as:

-no charge
-no cost
-costless
-chargeless

and so on.

The keywords number factor. The age of creating an ad group and load 4000 keywords instantly is over. Although there is not a specific rule for how many keywords you should use, follow Google’s recommendations on the amount of keywords. Google recommends: maximum 100 Ad groups per campaign and 750 keywords per Ad group.

Targeted but not over targeted. So many people loose money because of that reason. If you have yoga training center in Florida it’s obvious that people from New York won’t be interested in your services. So displaying a general term such as “Yoga” or even “Yoga training center” will display your ad on Google Adwords and prospects with no interest in your offer will click your Ad which means extra cost for your campaigns and not transformed into sales.

On the other hand if you use a specific term like:

“Yoga Training Center in Florida”

You have more targeted clickthroughs, targeted prospects and eventually more sales.

But there is a drawback on that tactic. If you are extremely targeted and use a keyword of over 6-7 words it’s highly possible that no one will search for that term and have no clicks or even views for your Ad.

How to find keywords? You could use the Google keyword suggestion tool but because so many other Adwords users use it, the keywords from that tool are very expensive.

Other tools you can use are:

These tools are free but if you want a more sophisticated and advanced option you can use word tracker paid service: http://www.wordtracker.com

Use always the plural form of your words. Don’t use “Yoga Training Report” but also “Yoga Training Reports”.

Exploit the misspelling errors. Research indicates the 12%-15% of the search phrases and words are misspelled. So don’t use only the term “staff” but also “stuff”.

Use hyphens. For example use both terms like: “Yoga Training Center” and “Yoga-Training-Center”

Use Acronyms: If you use the phrase “internet service provider” in your campaigns you can also use the acronym ISP in your Ads.

Use of domain names. This is powerful because it’s the most targeted term you can find. If your website’s domain name is www.yogatrainingcenter.com you must use it as keyword term.

I see article marketing and Google Adwords at the opposite ends of a spectrum that contains many elements that impact the effectiveness of your marketing.

What are some of the differences?

Article marketing creates a very high quality visitor or subscriber, because the visitor or subscriber has already been exposed to you and your style before they visit your web site or opt in to your list.

Google Adwords, on the other hand, creates a much lower quality subscriber, almost by default. What do I mean, default? You see, with Google Adwords, the visitor has only a few seconds to make a decision about whether to click the link. So they make an impulsive decision. They click just to see what you have. And whether they need it or not it just cost you 50 cents or a dollar or whatever. But with article marketing, there is no cost involved in losing the person who doesn’t like what you offer.

There was a time, not long ago, when all it took to be a successful affiliate marketer was to carefully choose a product or service, put together an AdWords campaign, and make the destination URL your affiliate link. You didn’t even need your own website to be successful. This process of direct linking came to be known as the “Google Cash” method. While the AdWords game is no longer as simple as it once was it is still worth playing.

These days the AdWords game has gotten a lot more complex. And while it’s in your best interest to become familiar with the other pay-per-click options, for now, Google’s AdWords is the undisputed king of the hill.

The key to success in playing the AdWords game is knowledge. You must acquire a fundamental understanding of how the AdWords system works and stay abreast of all the latest changes to the program. On top of that you must stay in the know on the latest techniques for taking advantage of the system. This includes blackhat tactics, whether you choose to use them or not.

Staying ahead of the curve is becoming a necessity for the AdWords marketer. The crackdown on direct linking put many affiliate marketers, riding high on the “Google Cash” cow, completely out of business. The problem was that the direct linkers had put all their eggs into one basket so when Google took the basket away they had nothing left. Of course there’s always the old fashion approach: take the time and create a substantial website, filled with free, useful content. From such a site you can promote whatever you want without having to worry about the ever-changing moods of Google’s AdWords program.

In the midst of all the AdWords minutiae it is vitally important not to lose sight of the fact that AdWords is just a tool. Remember, your goal is to drive traffic to your chosen site. Mastering a few of the other approaches to generating traffic will strengthen the foundation of your affiliate business.

Always remember, AdWords is ever-evolving; first they cracked down on direct linking, decimating the “Google Cash” cow, and now they’re going after link cloaking and affiliate mini-sites that lack, in their view (the only one that matters), sufficient content. Who knows if or when they’ll go after directories? The bottom line is you need a multitude of weapons in your arsenal: search engine optimization, AdWords and other pay-per-click options, classified ads, forum posting, ezine advertising, articles, rapid mini-site creation, press releases, viral, blackhat, and anything else that comes along. In short, be prepared for whatever may come, and sufficiently diversified in your approach to promoting your products.

Google Adwords - Don't Make Assumptions You Can No Longer Afford

I made a post in a forum the other day, posing a small conundrum about which Google Adwords ad should be kept and which should be discarded based on the CTR figures which each Ad managed to achieve.

And it's interesting how different people measure the success, or otherwise, of their Google Adwords campaigns. I'm always advocating testing, but there has to be a few caveats when you run tests.

The example which I gave in the forum was as follows, and was based on an actual campaign that I had managed for a client in the past.

Imagine you have an Adwords group with two ads running with optimisation turned off, i.e. Google Adwords will just distribute the search traffic uniformally between your two ad creatives. After 160 you can see that Ad A has a CTR of 6.8% and Ad B has a CTR of 1.2%

Now the question is, which ad do you run with? Which one do you axe?

When the client saw the stats he immediately said we should remove Ad B because it wasn't performing well enough.

Oh dear.

Obviously he hadn't listened to a word I had said about how to manage a successful Adwords campaign. Ho hum.

Yes, CTR is important, but not as important as ROI. Return On Investment.

What's the point in buying a ton of traffic if all it does is burn a hole in your wallet? You need sales to run a business, not clicks.

"Oh yes. Well what's the ROI figures then?" he asks, as if he knew this was what he was meant to say all along.

Well, Ad A had a conversion rate of 0.9%, whereas Ad B had a conversion rate of 9.4%

"Delete Ad A immediately," was his suggestion.

Is this what you would have done? I didn't.

The fact that the conversions didn't actually have a significant monetary value wasn't the point, because anyone who runs their own list knows that it's not always about the initial sale that's important, but the value of a customer over a whole lifetime.

Looking at it on the surface, and now that I've revealed that ROI is more important than CTR, you would expect to delete Ad A and run with the Ad B because of its high conversion rate.

Well, look again, my student.

You see, to read anything into the adverts that we test day in and day out, you always have to ensure that you make decisions that are based on statistical significance.

In the example, extrapolating the figures, you'll realise that we have the following:

Ad A, CTR = 6.8%, so for 2000 impressions that's 136 clicks. Conversion = 0.9% which results in 1 conversion for 2000 impressions.

Ad B, CTR = 1.2%, so for 2000 impressions that's 24 clicks. Conversion = 9.4% which results in 2 conversions for 2000 impressions.

3 conversions for our test. Is that a significant number of results for us to base our findings on?

NO.

Nowhere near enough data.

For a *minimum* we need at least 5 measurements in each group, that's 5 conversions for each Adwords Ad creative, before we can even start to run significance testing.

Of course, running Taguchi methods for multivariate split-testing would deliver a significant improvement over the simple A/B split test.

The benefit? It allows you to take the elements of the test which provide the most significant influence on the result. And in the example, it was neither Ad A nor Ad B that came out as the winner, but a subtle blend of the two.

Isn't science wonderful?

I just wish I had stayed awake longer during my stats lessons at school so that I didn't have to pay a ton of money on learning it all over again.

So just remember, when you come to measure your ad performance, make sure you have enough data to come to a statistically significant conclusion. It'll save you a ton of cash, I promise.

If they click on your ad and then make a purchase, you earn a commission. You do pay every time someone clicks on your ad whether they make a purchase or not.

Here are some tips on pay per click advertising:

1. After you have decided on the product you wish to promote, start your keyword search. Write down every possible keyword you can think of for the product. Use a keyword generating tool if you have one available.

2. Divide the keywords up into related areas. You will use each keyword section to create a targeted ad.

3. Come up with your ad headline. Use a keyword from your keyword sections in the headline.

4. Create your ad description. Use you keyword in the description as well. Your ad should be relevant to your keyword.

5. Set your budget. Determine your maximum per click. Assume it will take between 75-100 clicks to make a sale so set your budget accordingly. Start small. You can always increase it if you want to later.

6. Set up multiple ads focusing on one set of keywords per ad. You will then get more targeted traffic.

Don’t give up! It may take awhile before your campaigns start to show a profit. You need to hang in there!! Make sure you are comfortable with your budget because not all your campaigns will be profitable. You don’t want to go through your budget before you have made your first sale. Set up one campaign at a time and monitor it until it becomes profitable or you determine it won’t be. Then move on to the next. You will maintain more control this way. If you start too many campaigns at once, it is easy to spend more then you are profiting. Especially in the beginning.

You see ads all over the internet claiming that you can make hundreds of dollars a day while only spending 15 minutes of your time. Are they serious? There is only one profession I can think of that you can make that type of money that fast, and it sure isn’t affiliate marketing!

So what does it mean when you see “15 Minutes a Day” and “Start Earning 15 minutes From Now.”? What it means is simply this, with this type of affiliate marketing, you are advertising using pay per click marketing. While it is true that you simply type a few lines of information into an online form and you can start making money, there is also a great deal more to it then that. And yes, there are absolutely thousands of companies who are willing to pay you a commission as an affiliate. But in order to make your commission, a customer needs to make a purchase through your affiliate link. That sounds easy enough, but keep in mind that it generally takes about 75-100 clicks on your ad before you make a sale.

Pay per click advertising can be expensive. Especially for the new internet marketer who hasn’t learned a system yet. I highly recommend one of the affiliate marketing guides available on the internet if you are getting started in affiliate pay per click marketing. Learn from my mistake. Although it is certainly possible for your ad to run, someone to click on it and purchase the product all in the first 15 minutes, it is not very likely. Most people need at least a couple of hours if not days before they start getting results with their pay per click campaigns.

15 minutes a day? Not likely. Affiliate marketing can be profitable though if you put in the time and effort necessary. Maybe someday, you can only spend 15 minutes a day checking your bank account balances, but when you are first starting out, it will take a great deal more effort.

I recently held an internet marketing seminar at a WW2 spy school. The perfect setting, as the subject was internet marketing by stealth. A short while later, I began to think Google had sent an undercover agent to spy on us.

Probably not, but it certainly seemed like it. because a week or so after my seminar, Google had their famous clampdown on AdWord advertisers, who do not provide proper content on their landing pages.

So out went squeeze pages, bald affiliate sites (with no added value, just an affiliate link), mini sites consisting of a single sales page and so called arbitrage sites,where the visitor arrives only to be confronted with a website stuffed with Google AdWords!

I apologise to my Australian cousins, but we've all heard the joke about the Australian chat up line, which consists of three words: "Brace yourself, Shelia!". On the day of the seminar, everyone rocked with laughter when I said that -- but that's exactly what you're doing, if you use AdWords just to bring prospects straight to your sales page.

Worse than that, it's actually costing you big bucks! Here's why: courting. If you're of a certain age, you might understand that word and you may even remember the movie "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and the glee they showed when they were "Going courting!". If you're younger, you might know it as dating.

Marketing is exactly like courting and dating. It must be conducted slowly and purposefully, to allow your potential customer to get to know you. If done correctly, you will gain far more customers over the longer term and they will remain loyal to you.

So how is AdWords costing you big bucks?

Pay per click (PPC) advertising has revolutionized advertising on the Internet. In order to understand PPC advertising, let’s discuss PPC, its history, and some background information.

Let’s start our discussion with a definition of pay per click advertising from Wikipedia.

Pay per click (PPC) is an advertising technique used on websites, advertising networks, and search engines.

With search engines, pay per click advertisements are usually text ads placed near search results; when a site visitor clicks on the advertisement, the advertiser is charged a small amount. Variants include pay for placement and pay for ranking. Pay per click is also sometimes known as Cost Per Click (CPC).

While many companies exist in this space, Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing, which was formerly Overture, are the largest network operators as of 2006. MSN has started beta testing with their own PPC services MSN adCenter. Depending on the search engine, minimum prices per click start at US$0.01 (up to US$0.50). Very popular search terms can cost much more on popular engines. Abuse of the pay per click model can result in click fraud.

Pay per click advertising covers the three main search engines, but let’s concentrate on Google since it has the largest market share of searches on the Net. Pay per click advertising is where an advertiser creates an ad for a product or service that will be presented to a search engine (“SE”) user when the user searches on a specific key word or key word phrase. When you use an SE, you see the ads when you receive the results of the search. You have noticed that the ads are about the same information that you entered into the search. This is based on the keywords for which the ads are targeted.

The advertiser that puts the ad in the SE agrees that it will pay a certain amount to the SE each time the ad is clicked by a user. The order of presentation of the ads on the search engine results page depends on the price that the advertiser agrees to pay and the historical click-through rates of all ads shown for a given search.

This advertising concept has revolutionized Internet advertising and has created Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing, and Microsoft Adcenter. You identify a company that you want to promote, identify the keywords that searchers will use when searching for the company’s products, and set up a landing web page to receive the click from the SE. On the landing page, you place ad copy to sell the reader on clicking to the company’s site that you are representing. If the user clicks to the company site and takes the desired action (purchasing a product or completing a lead form), you are paid for the completion of the action. This will be a percent of the sale of a product or a flat payment for a sales lead.

Anyone can sign up for these programs and it is quite easy to do so. You can make money using this technique. However, before you think this will make you rich overnight, let’s get a little education on how it works.

When an SE presents your ad to a user, it is called an “impression”. When a user clicks on the ad, it is called a “click”. The SE develops a ratio called the click through rate (CTR) by dividing the clicks by the impressions. If your CTR remains high enough (this varies by SE’s, but usually above one percent is sufficient), your ad will continue to run. If it does not perform well, the SE will inactivate it until you change something about the ad to make it perform better.

Your account with the PPC program will have reports that show you the impressions, the clicks, the CTR. It will also show you your average cost per click, the total cost for the keyword (clicks time average cost), and the average position of the ad in the times it was displayed (first, second, third, etc.).

Economics of Pay Per Click Advertising

Pay per click (PPC) advertising has revolutionized advertising on the Internet. This allows for very targeted advertising to Internet users who are searching for the particular item that is being advertised. Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing are the two major PPC programs on the Internet today. Microsoft AdCenter is a recent newcomer to PPC programs.

It is easy to set up an advertising campaign under these programs, but one must be cautious and make good business decisions about the campaign. The intent is to make money rather than pay Google, Yahoo, or AdCenter more than you make.

When evaluating the potential profit from a PPC program, you will only be charged for the times that the user clicks your ad. However, there is another variable that you must consider which is called conversion rate (CR). This is the number of users who click the ad divided into the number of users who actually buy the product. A rough rule of thumb for CR is five (5) percent.

You need to project the economics of the campaign before you launch it. If you have a low cost per click (CPC) and the commission from your affiliate company is high, you can afford a campaign with a low conversion rate. On the contrary, if the commission per transaction from the affiliate company is low, and the CPC is high, you need a conversion rate that is high.

It is a matter of simple math to project the results of a sales campaign.

Profit per click = ($ per sale X Conversion rate) - (Average cost per click)

Let’s plug in some numbers and see how this works. Assume that the selling commission is $5.00, the conversion rate is 5%, and the average cost per click is $.10. Multiply the selling commission ($5.00) by the CR of 5% to get $.25. Subtract the cost per click (CPC) of $.10 from $.25 and you get a profit of $.15. This does not seem like a lot of money, but the Internet is viewed 24/7 so if you have 1000 clicks per month and convert 5% of them, you will make $150 for setting up the campaign and then monitoring it occasionally. If you set up several of these campaigns for different key words, you can make a nice supplemental income.

In summary, always do your homework and make solid assumptions about your campaign. Do the math so you are not surprised by a campaign that costs you money rather than making you money.

Adsense or Affliate Marketing - which is best for you?

Although I'm a big AdSense fan, I also realize that there are
other ways to make money online. Readers often ask me which
is better, AdSense or affiliate selling, and so here are my
thoughts on this very interesting question.

The short answer is "it depends". Now, you might think that's
a cop-out, but it's not. Let's go back to the fundamentals.

What is AdSense? It's an online billboard rental program, that's
what it is. Say you have (as Monty Python put it) "HUGE tracts
and tracts of ... land", except of course that the "land" is the
set of web pages that you control on your various sites. Along
comes Google who says "Hey, we'd like to put some billboards on
your land. We'll then go find some advertisers who'll display
their ads on the billboards and give you a cut of the money we
make by renting out the billboards. And don't worry, we'll take
care of finding and billing the advertisers -- all you do is sit
back and rake in the cash." You get to say where the billboards
are placed on your land (though Google is happy to give you some
suggestions based on what they know works for other land owners)
and how big they are, but you have no specific control over what
goes on the billboards. Overall the program sounds pretty good to
you, because it lets you spend your time and effort on other
things, such as acquiring more land. It's passive income to the
extreme.

PPC advertising definitely has a place in online marketing, but it doesn’t have to be your only long-term strategy.

Of course, the positive aspect of PPC advertising is the highly effective nature of where the ad ultimately appears. PPC is a highly targeted type of advertising that makes the best use of marketing dollars.

PPC advertising should not be avoided, but rather seen for what it is; a stop gap client conversion technique. The above statistics point to the fact that PPC advertising is effective, but not significantly more so than the site rankings of an optimized site.

When you have a plan that encompasses both short-term and long-term objectives you may likely see PPC advertising as a great way to jump start your online business, but there may come a time when you may find yourself relying on PPC advertising less and less. When that happens you can feel confident you have done an admirable job in optimizing your site for organic traffic.

Once that is established the advertising may be less important.

The same concept applies to online business. Use PPC advertising, but work hard on your sites reputation and internal marketing structure. You will find a positive reward for the long-term investment of internal site building and optimization.

In theory, using the search engines sponsored Pay Per Click advertising is a quick and easy way to provide instant and targeted traffic to your web site. And historically this has always been a good option for new web sites that don’t have any other way to get traffic.

Buying traffic via a Pay Per Click can be a viable way to get instant-targeted traffic. And a few years ago it was quite cost effective. It was fairly easy to hit a 4-6 times pay through (spend $100, sell $4-600) on a well-designed campaign. Now it’s tough to get 2 or 3 times your investment back.

Why is it so difficult to get a good payback now? There are several factors that can have a huge impact on results.

Competition – There are many more advertisers and web sites now vying for the same keywords Google Arbitrage – This is mainly an Adsense ploy to buy clicks to create higher paying Adsense clicks Affiliate Sales – These are folks who advertise products for others and make a commission on the sales Google Crack Down – Google has realigned their algorithms to insure more accuracy in search results Google CTR Factor – If you don’t get a good ratio of clicks verses views, your cost goes up

Also throw in the fact that you need to write a short ad (25 characters for the headline, 35 for the two lines of copy) that gets clicks, and find keywords that are very target driven before you even get to the cost.

These factors have all caused the price of a keyword to skyrocket. If you look at a basic $35 digital product and below price level, it’s getting pretty tough to make a profit on high cost keywords. And consider the fact that many web sites sell a physical product that may only have a 50% markup, this can get real ugly if your campaign is tight (low return).

Just so we all are on the same page, let’s look at the basic goal of PPC campaign. It’s all about the conversion rate. That’s how many products you sell per the number of visitors (200 visitors and 4 sales gives you a 2% conversion rate).

You need to determine if the keyword cost will pay through on the revenue generated by the sales (example: if each click costs you .35, and your product sells for $35.00, and you only convert 1 in 100 - you will lose money). Keep in mind that you will normally pay 2-6% to your payment processor so even though $35 is paid you only net $33 or less. So if you spent $35 on 100 clicks, you just went backwards.

Which means if you have a $35 product, you need to convert at least 2 out of 100 to make a profit on the campaign. Several years ago it was very possible to stay around .05-.25 per keyword click cost. Now it is much more difficult to find keywords below the .30 and many times it’s much higher than that.

There are other means to improve your conversion rate. A well-written and effective sales pitch can increase sales. Running promotions, offering special incentives, and offering solid value helps too. I know people who get a 6% conversion rate so it is possible to have a larger budget for keywords.

I also know people who have no problem spending $1000 to make $2000. If you look at it in a pure business sense, you’re doubling your money. But if something goes awry, or Google makes a right turn and you still go straight ahead it can get darn expensive.

I know folks who are spending $3-4,000 a day on their PPC campaigns. And they are at least doubling and more the return on investment. But the sad thing is they used to spend $1-2000 a day to make the same amount of money. So in many cases the cost has doubled, the profit remained the same.

This does cut a lot of people out of the game. Between the high dollar costs and the lower return, many won’t or can’t risk that type of money. And learning how to find the right keywords, and then write an effective ad is no walk in the park for most. Pay Per Click advertising can and does work. But you really have to have a well thought out campaign from start to finish. Good products, sales pitch, incentives, keyword research, effective ad writing, and conversion rates that can pay through are necessary now more than ever with the high costs.

But you should have a well-rounded marketing plan that includes PPC along with other methods to bring targeted visitors to your web site. Organic search engine traffic (basic SEO), a good linking strategy, and even offline advertising are all necessary for generating a constant stream of potential buyers.

An e-commerce store would probably define their conversion as a sale. When a customer buys something conversion tracker would track the sale and the keyword, adgroup and campaign the sale came from.

A loans site would define a conversion as lead and Conversion Tracker would track who filled out the loan application and what keyword, adgroup and campaign the conversion came from. A business that wanted traffic to go to a special page on their site would be able to track how many people went to the page and the keyword, adgroup and campaign that produced the pageview.

The second tracking tool we will talk about is the mother load of all free tracking tools.

Google Analytics

A very powerful web analytics software. Google analytics gives you a lot of detailed info. It will track all of your campaigns not just Adwords campaigns. You can set it up to track natural search listings, Yahoo/Overture, other pay per click campaigns, referrals, banner ads, article marketing efforts, it will track pretty much anywhere you are receiving traffic from including offline campaigns.

It is easy to set up put a piece of java code all ready written for you by Google into the pages of your site. You will learn things like who is visiting your website and where are they coming from? US, Canada, UK?

How many pageviews is your site getting? How many visitors are leaving your site immediately? How many visitors are returning to your site? How many times are these visitors returning to your site?

It will also tell you which campaigns are getting the sales, and how long visitors are staying on your website. It can tell you which pages are drawing in your visitors and which aren't.

Google Analytics will tell you all of this and much more. It will tell you what is working well and what isn't with your website. You take this information and keep what works and tweak what needs some improving. Google Analytics is a must have for a serious internet marketer and it is totally free. The drawback is the time you have to wait from signing up to finally getting your account. It took me about 2 months and my contacts have told me that although wait time can vary due to supply and demand, 2 months is about average.

The first thing you want to decide is your budget. If you are not sure how well your website converts keep the budget and bids low. If you advertise elsewhere and your site converts well and makes you a healthy ROI then you will probably convert well with Adwords also. In this case I would still start with relatively low bids and if Adwords is producing a strong ROI increase the bids for more exposure.

Find as many relevant and specific keywords as possible. The more specific the keyword is to your business the less likely it is to have a high search volume. This can be made up for by 2 methods. Finding a lot of specific keywords and using a few general keywords.

If you had a website selling guitars general keywords would be:

Guitars
Electric guitars
Acoustic guitars

Specific keywords would be:

Fender Stratocaster SRV edition
American Fender Stratocaster for sale
Gibson Epiphone Electric Guitar

If you find you are getting a lot of traffic but few conversions delete some of the general keywords. Make sure your landing page is relevant to your visitor by offering them a product, service or information very relevant to the keyword that they found you on.

If Google deems your website as very relevant to a keyword you will get a low minimum cpc (cost per click). This will way heavily in your favor because your can bid low and the keyword will be active. Traffic will cost you less. The more relevant your page the higher your Quality Score and the more likely you are to ranked higher than your competitors, for a lower cpc. This will give you a better shot at increasing sales and ROI and out performing the competition while at the same time paying less for traffic than they do.

It used to be, back in the "Good Old Days" of Internet Marketing, that just about anyone with a copy of the eBook GoogleCash could make some money with Google AdWords. You simply found a product to promote from ClickBank, created a couple of ads where you linked directly to the vendor's website (marking your ad (aff) to show it was an affiliate ad), created a list of relevant keywords and then just sat back, waiting for those commission checks to roll in.

Ah yes, the "Good Old Days".

Well, the "Good Old Days" are gone, it's true. Now Google limits the number of ads pointing to a specific website to only one. The person with the highest bid price gets the link. This makes it almost impossible to do any "direct linking" anymore. You no longer need to mark your ads showing that you are an affiliate but nowadays you almost always have to have your own landing page where you direct your traffic.

In addition, with their recent update called the "Google Slap", Google has made it an absolute must that your landing page be one that is relevant to the ads you write and the keywords that you choose to bid on.

All-in-all, it is much harder to make any AdWords money today than it was even a year ago.

But it is still definitely possible to do so. You just have to work a bit harder doing your research before "going live" with your AdWords campaigns.

The first step to take is to find a hungry market. Most people tend to find a product to promote first and then they try to find the market to promote it to. This is like putting your socks on after you've put your shoes on. You've completed the correct actions but you've done them in the wrong order.

Next step is to do your keyword research to find the relevant keywords for your campaign. It is important to group your keywords into small Ad Groups which contain a common keyword or theme. You would not want to show an ad with the headline "Need AdWords Software?" with keywords like "adwords ebooks" or "find adwords tutorial". You'd want keywords like "buy adwords software" or "adwords software reviews" to match a headline like that.

To make this "common keyword" technique much easier, I've developed a keyword research tool called "Your KeyWord Assistant Pro" which makes grouping keywords into tightly focused groups (ready to paste into AdWords) a snap.

After coming up with your keyword lists you're ready to create your AdWords campaign. Make certain that your landing page (the webpage that you're directing your visitors to) is relevant to your ads and keywords or you are going to be penalized by Google in the form of outrageous minimum keyword prices. Should you find this happening, here's a technique to use to see if your landing page is the culprit.

Select one of the "expensive" keywords and do a search for it on Google. Make a note of the URL of the website that is in the #1 position of the natural search results. Then go back into your campaign and temporarily change the destination URL of your ad to the URL of the top website from the search you just did. Then proceed to see what the minimum bid that Google is now requiring. If it has dropped to a much more reasonable price, your landing page needs to be rewritten to reflect this keyword phrase.

There’s certainly some truth to the assertion that things changed rapidly for big-time AdSense publishers after this change was made. It didn’t take long for advertisers to start excluding their ads from the content network, especially for pricey things. But it’s kind of like crying wolf — after all, many (most) of the big-time publishers were making their money using MFA (made for AdSense) sites that really didn’t profit the advertisers when compared to the ads that were shown on the SERPs. So the smart advertisers use split campaigns now, paying less for ads shown on the content network than those shown on Google’s sites. Why not? It’s what I’d do (and in fact what I do do) as an advertiser.

I just noticed on the AdSense What is New Page for August that in addition to the new way of setting up search to show on your own domain that they’ve added an extra option for viewing stats in advance reports.
Now instead of just viewing impressions either by ‘ad unit’ or ‘page’ publishers now have the option of viewing their stats by ‘individual ad’.
You see the options in the ‘Show Data by’ drop down menu.
The new option allows you to see your stats (CTR, eCPM etc) for each individual ad shown on your site. So on a skyscraper ad unit where 4 individual ads might be served to your blog this counts as 4 individual ad impressions. Alternatively if you view by ‘ad unit’ it would count as 1 impression and if you were to view by ‘page’ even if you had multiple ad units on the page it would only be counted once.

USA Hypocrisy, The WTO, and Internet Gambling

We’ve discussed the United States hypocrisy on Internet Gambling before, but this story from the Washington Post really takes the cake.

The story is a fascinating read - well worth dealing with the fact that it is annoying split up into 3 pages. In a nutshell, Antigua filed a World Trade Organization suit against the United States for trade treaty violations following the 2004 prosecution and conviction of an Antigua Internet Sports Book owner.

Antigua won the suit but the U.S. has thus far ignored the ruling.

The WTO cannot force a country to do anything. Even if found guilty, a country can refuse to change its trade practices. The WTO largely enforces its rulings by giving the victorious country the right to impose punitive duties on the loser’s products.

That enforcement mechanism works for big, rich countries such as the United States because other nations fear losing the vast U.S. market. But Antigua’s economy is so tiny that few U.S. companies would notice.

“The WTO gives the little guys clout, but it cannot guarantee symmetry of justice,” said Claude Barfield, a trade expert at the American Enterprise Institute.

So the Antiguans plan to ask the WTO for the right to impose sanctions that would hurt — namely, permission to copy and export U.S.-made DVDs, CDs and similar material. Hollywood is not amused.

From the article, it seems that this case may have been the impetus for the recent push for an Internet Gambling ban. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement act was approved by the House of Representatives 317-93 on July 11, 2006. Although it has passed the house, perhaps the Republicans in the Senate will realize that alienating 23 million online poker players while the President’s approval rating hovers around 30% might not be the best political strategy.

What can you do? Well, if you believe that individual liberty should win out over government intrusion, if you want a smaller government instead of a Big Brother Nanny State, or if you’re just sick of all the bad laws that have been passed lately then call your Senator today.

Tell him to get his head out of his ass long enough to stop this bad legislation from becoming law. Tell him if he doesn’t, you and your 40 beer drinking buddies, who normally never bother to vote, are going to make it a point to vote againts his party down the line this November.
