AdWords Tips, part 2: Ads That Get Clicks

If you’ve been following my advice so far, you’ll have read Perry Marshall’s Definitive Guide to Google Adwords to get quickly acquainted with the system (plus you’ve got a good handbook to refer back to), and you know how keywords work to show your ads. What’s next? Writing effective ads.
An effective AdWords ad is one that gets lots of clicks — that is the only thing to be concerned about when writing your ads (except, of course, Google’s editorial policy). If you’ve done your keyword research, you’ll get impressions; if you’ve got a page that converts to sales (or leads, or commissions), you’ll get a return on your investment. But getting people to your landing page is the ad’s job, and there are some things you can do to pump up your CTR, which will improve your ad’s position and lower your click costs. AdWords Tips, part 1: All About Keywords

This is the first of several ongoing posts I’ll be making about Google AdWords. As you probably know, Google AdWords is a pay-per-click marketing system, which is a great way to get traffic to your site. But if you don’t know the ins and outs, it can end up costing you a lot of money and not making you any.
So, what’s the key to success with AdWords? Well, I wish I could tell you there were one or two simple tricks, but the fact is, the best way to ensure success with AdWords is to be familiar with every aspect of the system. This will likely take weeks or months of research, plus a few bucks spent testing out a real AdWords account. However, you can greatly increase your chances by following this bit of advice: don’t skimp on the keyword research! Read the rest of this entry »

6 Steps To Picking Profitable Adsense Keywords - Part TWO

Step 4 Now determine which Adsense ads occupy which positions. You can do this by searching on Google for your keyword and looking to see which Adsense ads are generated in the search results and in which order they are. Another way to estimate this is to use the Adwords Accelerator tool. It has a feature whereby Adwords ads are dynamically displayed for a given keyword you input into the tool to check. If the Adwords advertiser has used "Adwords for Content" in his advertising, these ads will be the Adsense ads someone else is displaying on their website.
Step 5 Compare the ads you found in step 4 to the results of using a keyword check function tool (available on the internet). If the advertisers you find by doing this closely match those you found in step 4, you will more than likely have a profitable keyword.
If the advertisers are not he same, then the advertiser is possibly not using the "Adwords for Content" mode of advertising in his campaigns. This means that the keyword may not be the basis for the Adsense ads and may not be profitable.
Step 6 Now you must get the traffic. If you decide to get traffic using the Adwords approach, then just use the keywords in your Adsense ads that scored well from the above evaluation. Then, use lower cost per click keywords in your Adwords ads. The difference between the earnings from the click you get on your Adsense word from the cost of the click you pay on your Adwords word will be your profit.
If you are planning to use search engine optimization techniques to get traffic to the website where your ads are, make sure the keywords you choose have the highest KEI possible. KEI is the ratio of the number of searches for a keyword to the number of competing sites having the keyword. The combination of a high KEI and a high score from the above evaluation will yield the best profit results.

6 Steps To Picking Profitable Adsense Keywords - Part ONE

Knowing how to find the best keywords for use in your Adsense ads is not a straightforward process. Finding and implementing high profit, low competition keywords in your ads really is the trick for making Adsense payoff big.

The following process should yield profitable, low competition keywords for your Adsense ads. This process is not perfect, but when you analyze it and try it for yourself, you can see that it makes sense. Adsense that is.

Step 1 Research some keywords for your niche that have a high CPC (cost per click )value. To do this, first find your keywords using the Google Adwords keyword tool or another tool that will give you niche specific lists of keywords. Save those keywords into a spreadsheet program as a csv file. Copy and paste those keywords into Google's Traffic Estimator (you will need an Adwords account). The traffic estimator will give you the estimated clicks per day and the average cost per click (CPC) for each keyword. Copy and paste this information back into your spreadsheet file for later reference.

Step 2 Multiply the average CPC by 30% to get an estimate of your maximum earnings per click. The higher the average CPC, the more likely the CPC for the 2nd - 8th positions are high as well. You want this higher average CPC to start because if the CPC starts to drop off significantly after the 3rd position, your chance of getting high click earnings as an Adsense publisher will be diminished.

Step 3 Use any one of many tools available on the internet for helping to estimate the 1st - 8th position CPC values. These tools will estimate the CPCs for each position and allow you to see how much the CPCs drop off after the first position. This dramatically helps your analysis for picking the most profitable keywords. If the CPC values stay close to the each other and to the value of the first position, then you will more than likely have a profitable keyword...

Google Adsense and AdWords issues - Part THREE

Pay per click vs. pay per view
The third issue I have is about the fact that publishers are only payed by clicks and not by number of times ads are displayed. It is a known fact that simple exposure to advertising messages on long term builds awareness and eventually result in sales. If a reader is exposed to an ad, especially if it is an image ad, he will register it uncosciously. He may not click the ad and not buy anything at that moment. But next time he wants to buy a certain product or service and looks for it, he may unconsciously or even consciously will choose the advertised brand. We know this works, otherwise we would not have brand building advertising everywhere on the streets, in the TV and press.

I feel it is unfair that the publisher is not payed for all these brand building and awareness campaigns that didn't result in direct clicks and sales. Again the system benefits the advertisers. They don't pay for all the impressions, and ideally they don't need to receive and pay for a single click to increase their brand awareness and eventually sales just by displaying their ads on Google's network of publishers.

I feel a combination of impressions and clicks would be a fair deal to both the publisher and the advertiser. Especially when we are talking about brand awareness messages. Until this is introduced I would not allow pay per click ads that mention brand names at all. Even in this case a certain ad can simply raise awareness of concepts and product categories, that indirectly helps advertisers.

Of course such a combined system will raise flags too. What about all the people who use ad blockers. Is it fair to pay the publisher for ads that never appeared?

Accidental clicks
Fourth issue is the accidental clicks. How many times have you misclicked on a page? Either because you didn't pay attention or because you have a poor mouse that has a jumping cursor or scroll wheel. Some publishers are so greedy that they put so many ads on a page that the readers have hard time navigate the page as if it was a landmine. If users click on an ad by mistake it's likely that they will not check the opened site, but will close the window or navigate back.

Is it fair that advertisers pay for these accidental clicks? There are many ways to prevent this unfair charge, but maybe again I should say suck it up, the free brand building you're getting should compensate for the occasional loss by accidental clicks.
Is it fair that the publisher is payed for these clicks? No, but similarly this compensates for all the free brand building.

Image quality
At last I would like to find a solution to an annoyance regarding image ads. Have you noticed that many Google image ads are blurry and squashed vertically? It is not the advertisers or web designers fault. It is a fault of Google AdWords system.
A perfectly sized image that is uploaded to Google AdWords will not only be recompressed, but also squashed to fit the small strip at the bottom that says "Ads by Gooooogle" and "Advertise on this site". There is no way to upload a smaller image, because the system only accept a certain size, so basically one has to get around it by designing the ad smaller as if to accomodate for the strip. Than vertically expand it to make it the original size that AdWords accepts. Upload it and see how the system resizes it back. This is a big problem, because with all this resizing you lose all the detail in your image. You can't have pixel perfect designs and can't use pixel fonts.
If you know a workaround please let me know, because this is causing a big headache for many designers.

After all this let me say that both systems work well in most cases and I'm very happy with both services. I realize that nothing is perfect and I trust Google will be able to innovate itself out of these issues sooner than you can click.

Google Adsense and AdWords issues - Part TWO

Click fraud
First of all from the advertisers side. The big issue discussed heavily all over the internet and unfortunately for Google even at court is click fraud. Some "smart" publishers start clicking their own ads to generate more money. This practice can spend advertising budgets in no time and the advertisers don't get any valuable traffic for their money.

Apparently some publishers go to the lenght to hire people who click their websites regularly from different locations to try to hide the fraudulent nature of their clicks.

Google of course tries to fight this and have implemented many systems that detect these practices and shuts out publishers who misbehave.

Click fraud attack
This brings me to the second problem that affects legitimate publishers. If someone wants to do bad to a publisher and wants to shut him out of google and deprive him from his accumulated income with Google Adsense, he can theoretically click many times on a specific ad and the publisher will be disqualified. The publisher has no means to prove Google that it wasn't him clicking his own ads, but a wrong doer or competitor. This is a serious danger because when a publisher is shut out he loses all his earnings that were accumulated in his account till the incident and he will also be deprived from further incomes that may have been counted on for further operation.

For the advertisers I say suck it up. Consider that a certain percentage of your advertising spending is lost, just like with press and TV and be happy with the rest that brings in traffic and sales. Think about it as the cost per click for your ad is somewhat higher then it would be in an ideal world and live with it. Nothing is perfect, even this media has flaws.

For the publishers however I don't have a consolation. If they are shut out unjustly to protect the advertisers, they are at the mercy of their competitors and wrong doers. Hopefully Google tracks these maliscious users somehow. Unfortunately I have read about many publishers who had to look for other ways to monetize their sites, because they suffered a click fraud attack...

Google Adsense and AdWords issues - Part ONE

First the basics. Google Adsense is a system that allows website owners to display ads on their sites. Publishers are not payed by the number of ads displayed, neither by the size of the ads. They are not even payed by how many times the ads are displayed as it is done in traditional advertising, like print or TV. The publishers are payed by the number of clicks on the ads.
On the other side of the equasion, we have Google Adwords, that allows business owners to buy ads to be displayed on Google Adsense participant's sites. Advertisers need to specify keywords that match they advertisements. Google will match these keywords found on publisher sites and display relevant ads.
This sounds and works great. It's a great business for publishers to get a steady revenue, great way for businesses to publicize their websites to a targeted audience. And, it's a million dollar business for Google...
I've been on both sides. I'm running Google ads on this site as a publisher and do Adword campaigns for clients. I have a few reservations that I'd like to share...

Google Adsense Issues

Google AdSense is a free advertising program that lets bloggers and other Web site owners place contextual advertising no the pages of their Web sites. The idea is that a blog about food, for example, might have ads for cooking ingredients and dishes. The chances that a reader will find the ad useful and click on it increases because the subject material of both the content and the ads are related—most of the time.

Web Site Traffic Building Method

Besides having an affiliate program, which should be your #1 traffic building method, there's one other traffic building method you must consider- writing articles. There are, of course, other methods such as search engines and directories, banner advertising, links from other sites, ezine advertising, posting to forums as an expert giving advice, pop-up, pop-under, exit traffic etc...

I have found that these methods do not yield high enough results to warrant the time and money spent implementing them at this point in the process. Posting in forums is inefficient. Sure, you will get hits, and yes some people will grow to regard you as an expert but the time spent on this strategy is rarely proportional to the pay-off.

I hear this advice often but for most businesses this just isn't the best way to go. Only bother with this if find you have free time. Banner advertising, unless highly targeted or paid on a PPC basis, is often hit or miss.

Pop-up, exit traffic, and other traffic building methods of the genre are worthless unless you are using it to collect email addresses by giving away something free. Take into account the interests and needs that the stream of traffic has and create a page that will appeal to them so that they will opt-in to your list. This is the only way that I have been able to get any money out of this kind of traffic.

Even then, it wasn't as profitable as other methods and t his is why I don't recommend it. Getting links from other sites isn't recommended because it usually provides no way to establish credibility. I recommend concentrating most of your time on writing articles for several reasons:

¡è They can be permanent ¡è They can reach large, targeted audiences ¡è They have the potential to establish you as an expert quickly

None of the other methods allow all of these qualities. To get maximum sales by writing articles should go without saying by now that anything you produce should be your absolute best work. Articles, as your primary method of building traffic, will be many of your prospects first experience of you.

This first experience should be absolutely breath-taking. They should be so impressed by your article, so amazed at your knowledge, and so curious about what other problems that you can solve for them, that they will click through to your site.

Your articles should not be sloppy. They aren't "just articles." Writing of articles should not be taken lightly. After you have identified an article that pulls more sales in regards to others you should start spreading it around the web any way possible. To make sure that it is the article pulling the sales and not the sales copy at the end of the article use the same sales copy on all the articles that you test.

When offering your articles to websites give them the option to sign up for your affiliate program so that they can get paid when someone clicks on the link at the bottom of your article. This will, hopefully, motivate them to use your article.

AdSense Tip #5

Choose the right AdSense format

Wider formats are successful because the ads are compact, easy to read and are complementary to the content. The top three AdSense formats are:

  • 336x280 large rectangle

  • 300x250 medium rectangle

  • 160x600 wide skyscraper
Another successful format is the 468x15 horizontal ad links, that can be placed under your navigation bar.

Important Tags || High Ranking

The following tags are important in order to get you that high ranking that you must have to succeed on the internet.

The TITLE tag: This is one of the most important tags. Make sure to use your keyword at least once in this tag. The SE's display the provided information as the title on the search engine results page. It shouldn't be longer than 60 - 80 characters - some SE's might cut longer strings.

The META-Keywords tag: Contrary to what many people believe, the importance of this tag is fairly low nowadays. Provide only your most important keywords and maybe one or two synonyms.

The META-Description tag: The SE's display this information as the description in the search engine results page.

Your description acts as an ad for the searcher, so it's a good idea to mention the most exciting benefit of your product. Use your specific keyword at least once and keep the description under 200 characters.

The H tags: These are the Headline tags -- H1 is the most important, H2 is second... The H tags are fairly important for the ranking of your pages -- try to use your specific keyword at least in the H1 tag.

The BODY tag: Use your keyword throughout the body text -- especially in the opening- and final paragraph. Also, try to use synonyms together with your specific keyword.

Follow these simple rules and the SE ranking of your pages will definitely improve and this will automatically boost web site traffic.

Expanding your Keyword List

Start by drawing up a list of words and phrases that relate to your company, your products and services. Ask other people to help as well, for example, staff members, friends, family, and anyone else you can think of. If you are in the position to do so, find out directly from your existing customers.

It is important to recognise that the most suitable keywords are not necessarily the ones which you think are the best, but those which will bring you the most customers. The keywords you want to focus on are the ones which people type into the search engines when they are looking for the information, products or services which you have to offer.

If you have access to your server logs or a web statistics programme you may be able to find out which keywords visitors are currently using to access your site. You can capitalise on this information by optimising your pages to further promote the products and services that people are already interested in.

Another approach is to learn from your competitors. If you already know who your competitors are take a look at their websites to determine which keywords they are using. Or try searching in Google or Yahoo for the products and services you offer to see which websites appear at the top of the search engine results. This way you can learn from companies who are already leading the field.

Ways to make money from Adsense By Asking Questions At Discussion groups

I recently had an interesting conversation with a young Internet and computer techie. He asked me whether there were quick ways to make money online by answering technical questions and helping people to solve their computer and web-related problems. My answer was that there were many discussion groups where participants would get these answers for free. I advised him that he had a better chance of making money by making use of this free advice available online rather than by trying to sell his own advice.

There are tons of online discussion groups where leading world experts will answer your questions and give you valuable insight for free. It is amazing why most people do not think of using these online forums to learn as much as they can about the most effective ways of making money from Adsense.

These forums can easily be found through you favorite search engine.
