Creating a YouTube channel full of interesting, funny, useful, or just plain silly videos is a great way to start your climb to Internet stardom. After all, the saying goes, you can’t win if you don’t try.
But, unfortunately, with videos uploaded each minute, not everybody can become famous on YouTube instantly.
So in the meantime, while you wait and work hard to be discovered, why not make money with your YouTube channel? You put hard work into your YouTube videos and vlogs, so why not let your YouTube channel do work for you?
Google AdSense is a free and simple way to monetize your YouTube channel without the hassle of maintaining a relationship with individual advertisers. When you sign up for AdSense, you have access to thousands of advertisers who will bid on the ad space you provide on your channel. The highest bidder wins. Each time a YouTube viewer clicks on an ad that appears within your video or in the upper right hand corner, you get paid!
Google AdSense focuses on providing your YouTube channel with ads that are relevant to your viewers and target audience to increase the likelihood that the ads will get viewed.
AdSense also provides you with an array of data and reports so you can see how these advertisements are performing. And the best part is you get all of this by just signing up. In fact, AdSense basically allows you to sit back and make money with little to no extra work—on the advertising end that is.
In order to maximize the amount of money you earn from using AdSense on your YouTube channel, it is essential to increase your viewers. After all, if nobody is watching your videos, then there won’t be anybody to click on your advertisements and give you a profit.
The best way to increase views on your YouTube channel is to promote your videos using social media. This shouldn’t be anything new to you.
If you haven’t done so already, set up social media accounts specifically for your channel on the platforms your viewers spend the most time on. Use these platforms to announce new video uploads, engage with your viewers, and host contests. No matter what you are posting, pinning, or tweeting, social media is a great way to get more views for your YouTube videos and ultimately increase your revenue.
So how do you get started with AdSense? Because AdSense is a feature of Google, you have to have a Google account. If you don’t, visit Google’s website and sign up. While it may be tempting to use a Gmail account name that reflects your YouTube channel, it is best to create a personal email account because you will only be allowed one individual and business AdSense account in a lifetime.
Google AdSense will walk you through the steps for a quick and easy account setup. You can then use your newly created personal Gmail account to setup an AdSense account with the same ease. It may take a few days for Google to review your request for an AdSense account.
If you are approved, Google will send you an email with a AdSense account number (publisher ID). Write it down where you can easily access it. This number will serve as your AdSense account number for all channels, sites, or content on the Internet where you will be using AdSense.
Once you have an account, you must enable your YouTube channel to be monetized. Visit the “monetization” tab in your YouTube account settings and click enable.
In order for you to be able to monetize your video on YouTube, it must be 100% original. If you are uploading content from other YouTube videos or using a segment of another user’s video, you may not be eligible for monetization. If it is mandatory that you upload unoriginal content, make sure you obtain the rights and licenses first.
After your account has been “monetized”, you will add your AdSense account number. Your YouTube channel and AdSense account will now be linked opening up the gateway for revenue.
Google allows you to display ads on the videos of your choosing. After you have uploaded a new video and wrote a brief description, you will see a box that asks if you’d like to monetize this video. Click this box only if you want ads to appear on this video.
You will have options for the way you want the ads to appear in your video. Select the top two options—overlay in-video ads and TrueView in-stream ads. Overlay in-video ads allow transparent ads to be displayed at the bottom of your video while TrueView ads give the viewer the choice of ads they would like to see and when.
Connecting an AdSense account and enabling your videos to be monetized should be done closest to the launch of your channel as possible. If you are just beginning a channel, set up AdSense and enable monetization immediately.
You can also do this with 100s of uploads under your belt. But the sooner you add AdSense to your videos, the better because you never know when one of your videos is going to go viral. And imagine all of the revenue you will miss out on when this happens!
It is also important when using AdSense not to click on your own ads. While this may seem like an ingenious way to increase your channel’s profit, Google is a step ahead. If you are caught clicking on your own ads, your YouTube account will be ineligible for monetization, and you will be banned from AdSense.
Overall, Google AdSense is great way to start making money on YouTube with your videos.
