6 Best Google AdSense Placement and Layout Tactics

The following Google AdSense placement strategies have been tested on thousands of sites that reported improvement in ad-share revenue. So if you’re just starting out and looking for a strong beginning, these AdSense layouts are probably your best bet.
However, you don’t have to follow the general wisdom all the time. Feel free to experiment on your own. Every site is different, so if you really don’t want to make money on the table, you have to see by testing how you can get the most out of Google AdSense.
Before we start, let me give you a quick tip: Google AdSense allows its publishers to display a maximum of 3 ad units, 3 link units and 2 search boxes on a single page. So to maximize your chances I recommend you use all the 3 ad units per page.
If you don’t want to use any of the other type of ads, fine. But ad units are usually the most profitable, so don’t be afraid of installing all 3 of them (if your pages are at least 600-700 words long).

1. Place Your Best-Performing Ad Units at the Top

You can see which ad units are making you the most money by going to Google AdSense, Performance Reports, Ad units.
If you choose here the ad unit that makes you the most money (it’s automatically listed at the top), it can be a good idea to place this type at the top of your pages, possibly above the fold.
If you haven’t made any money with AdSense yet, the Large Rectangle and Medium Rectangle ad formats are usually the best performing ones according to Google.
If you’re looking for a good start, put either of them somewhere below your first paragraph on your pages, either left-aligned or right-aligned, with or without text wrapping around them (testing can tell you which version makes you the most money).

Note: Placing too many ads and too little content on a page has always been a big no-no. However, especially after Google Panda and Penguin, it’s strictly forbidden!
You must keep an eye on your ad-content ratio, otherwise your site will get a ranking penalty and soon you won’t have any visitors to make money with AdSense.
Bottom line: don’t put so many AdSense ads above the fold that your visitors have to scroll down to start reading your content.

2. Make Text Wrap Around Your Above-The-Fold Ad Units

For the above mentioned reason, aligning your ads to either side of the page instead of centering them can be a good strategy, so that some of your content still appears above the fold to please your visitors (and Google).
Ideally, you shouldn’t even place any ads directly below your main headline: instead, write your first paragraph and place the ad only below that.
Here’s a piece of code that can help you left- or right- align your AdSense units so that text wraps around them.
Just copy-paste it where you want it to appear on your site and replace <<GOOGLE JAVASCRIPT GOES HERE>> with the code AdSense gives you.

<div style="float:left;margin-right:5px;">
<<GOOGLE JAVASCRIPT GOES HERE>>
</div>

Note: The above code will left-align your ads, and the text will wrap to the right side of the page. If you’d like to change that so that the ad is right-aligned and text wraps to the left side of the page, change float:left to float:right and margin-right to margin-left.

To Wrap Around or Not to Wrap Around?

You don’t necessarily have to wrap text around your ads. Some of the webmasters I’ve worked with reported that they had a higher click-through rate without text wrapping.
As always, the only way to discover what works best for you if you test it.
Example: Use text wrapping for the first 2 weeks, then change it back to no-text wrapping for the next 2 weeks and keep the version that works best for your site.
If you don’t want text to wrap around your AdSense, simply paste the code that Google gives you without using any of the code I gave you above.
However, keep in mind that if you don’t wrap text around your above-the-fold ad units, your visitors will have to scroll lower to find your content. And the lower your content is, the higher the risk of getting a ranking penalty by the search engines. As always, it’s your call...

3. Place Videos Near Your Ads

Although placing images next to your AdSense units is forbidden by Google (because it got too many false-clicks), using videos to draw some attention to your ads is a good idea and perfectly legal.
So go to YouTube, Facebook or any other free video hosting site that allows embedding (or create your own videos with Sparkol) and place a video above or below your ads to hold your visitors’ attention at the right place.
This AdSense placement will surely increase your earnings by improving your click-through-rate.

4. Place Quotes or Testimonials Next to Your Ads

Similarly to the above strategy, this is aimed at getting more attention for your ads.You can even use highlighting like this to increase the effectiveness of this AdSense placement idea:
“I just love Business Online Guidance. Steve helped me launch one of the most successful social networking sites on the net. Thank you!”
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook.com

“Anything is better than lies and deceit!”
Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

5. Place a Skyscraper Ad in Your Sidebar... or Not?

Actually, this AdSense placement idea is more of a myth than fact.
Sure, at first it seems like a good idea to fill the blank space on the side of your screen, but according to my own and other webcasters’ experience, this is not the best Google AdSense placement from a click-through-rate perspective.
Not only did it have a terrible conversion rate for us (somewhere around 0.1-0.5%), it also lowered the conversion rate of our better performing ads in the main content column, probably because of distracting our visitors.
Anyway, you know what’s coming next: test to see whether it will work for you or not.

6. Use Google's Heatmap for the Best Google AdSense Placement

Finally, I hope you’ve seen Google’s Heatmap already.
It will show you which areas of your page get the most attention from your readers, so you can place your ads accordingly.

So there you go: these are the best Google AdSense placement and layout strategies I know about.
If you try them one of the following 3 options will happen:
1, You’ll send me a bouquet of flowers as a token of your appreciation, because I just made you rich.
2, Nothing will change, you’ll make approximately the same income.
3, You’ll be chasing me down in a dark alley with a chainsaw in your hands, because the above tips ruined your earnings (relax, it’s only temporary, you can always change back later).
Why? Because every site and blog is different. What works for Site A may be terrible advice for Site B.

So always do your own testing before making the final call on your AdSense layout. This is the single best advice anyone will give you.

Ad Positioning: Tactics to Increase Your AdSense Earnings Overnight

increase-adsense-earnings.jpgBy Darren Rowse

In this series I’m examining tactics that can be used to increase AdSense earnings immediately. Read the introduction to this series here.
Today I want to talk about positioning your AdSense ads – something that has a very significant impact upon the amount of money that they are able to earn.
I learned this lesson after I’d been using AdSense for some time – I often wish I’d discovered it earlier – because not thinking it through earlier cost me a significant amount of money!

My Story of Learning about AdSense Positioning

I remember clearly the time that my AdSense earnings almost doubled over night through me simply moving them from one part of my blog to another.
Up until the point where I made this discovery my AdSense ads had been largely in a banner position on my blog. I don’t remember my exact reasoning for putting it there but it was probably because that’s where I saw all the big sites doing. My blog’s post pages looked like the diagram to the right.
Ad-Positioning 1.jpg
Performance with this positioning was OK – but then again, I didn’t know any different so while I was earning enough on my blog at this point to make a day or two a week of earnings I was blissfully unaware of the potential that my blog had to take me a step closer to going full time as a blogger.
I’m not sure of why I decided to experiment with my ad positioning but after a while of positioning my AdSense ads this way I decided to have a ‘play’ with other positions. I began to think about where on my page my readers would give their full attention and decided at the top left hand side of the content area would probably be the most logical position for people to look at a web page (as that’s where they start reading). This was at a time before AdSense brought out their ‘heatmap’ which confirmed that this was a wise move.
So late one afternoon I decided to move my ad unit from the banner position to this spot at the top left hand side of my post area.
My ads now looked like the diagram to the left.
Ad-Positioning 2.jpg
I was actually a little nervous about making this move. What if my earnings went down and I started going backwards?
I decided to give the new position a couple of days testing. I could afford to lose earnings for two days but if they didn’t at least match the previous positioning I’d switch it back.
That night just before I went to bed I decided to log into AdSense to see what the results were like after a few hours.
Imagine my surprise when I saw my CTR 40%!
40% more readers were clicking my ads and this was obviously already impacting my overall earnings!
I didn’t sleep too well that night as I realized the power of what I’d discovered. I could potentially see a 40% increase in my earnings with a simple move of my ads.
The next morning I awoke earlier and logged into AdSense and found that the CTR was now up by just under 50%.
That day I’d increased my earnings enough to dedicate at least another day a week to blogging by simply changing the position of an ad unit!

Tips on Ad Positioning

general_sm_en.jpgAd positioning is vitally important to the performance of ad units like AdSense.
In general – the positions that are ‘hot’ can be seen on the heatmap to the right (this is the official AdSense heatmap which they put together from their own research and observations of where ads work best. You can see how anywhere at the top of content can work best (the brightest orange area) but that in general above the fold and to the left seems to be the ‘hotter areas’.
This does vary from blog to blog and there are some specific spots that work best on blogs (I’ll show them below). The key is to try different things and to find what works best on your blog.

5 Google Adsense Tips for better Click Through Rate (CTR) Optimization

I was doing some testing with Adsense Ad placement not to long ago because my click through rate (CTR) was quite low. I run a website with both a WordPress blog and a phpBB forum installed. After doing a couple of days research on the topic I found out some basic optimizing techniques that would result in a much higher CTR. Not only does it improve the CTR but it also makes the website look much nicer. All the optimization I used is based around layout and styling. So here are 5 tips that should increase your CTR:
1. Wrap your Adsense code with its own div class and css style the background.
This works well with 728 x 90 banner ads, especially if your website is wider and you want to center the Adsense code. I would add a color to the div background (I use a very subtle shade of grey) and add padding so that it separated the ad block from the rest of your content. You can also add a border which works well and makes the Adsense ad look bigger. Often the ads can make a website look very messy so separating them from the rest of your website will help to clean it up and people will see them better. You will also want to add the same background color to your Adsense code as you have with your div background. Here is an example:
2. Not all ads are made equal. Only select the recommended ad sizes, these are:
728 x 90 – Leader board
300 x 250 – Medium Rectangle
336 x 280 – Large Rectangle
160 x 600 – Skyscraper
Though it is no secret and this has being reported all over the internet this is actually quite a big issue, especially for those who have only just started with Adsense. Though there are quiet a few other ad block sizes available, those 4 work the best by far in my experience.
3. Lay your website out to allow for Adsense. Though most people don’t like to design a website around ads it actually can help to improve your CTR. Sure content is the key to your traffic and thus getting more clicks, however without good layout for ads they will get overlooked and your CTR will be low. Ads that get overlooked tend to be ones which alert the reader “these are tacky ads” or they completely miss them. I have found the best ad placement for a forum is the banner ad at the top and bottom and also just below the first post.
This is an example of a forum layout I like to use when faced with a standard styled forum. If you feel confident in forum styling I would highly recommend a layout similar to a blog (with a sidebar with replies looking like comments on a blog), however since most forums are blocky and stretch the page this is what I have found works the best for me:
Optimized Adsense Forum Layout
Optimized Adsense Forum Layout
For a blog the best placements are just below the title using a 336 x 280 rectangle or in the sidebar above the page fold. Depending on your blog type you can also get good CTR by placing a 336 x 280 ad block or if wide enough 728 x 90 ad block at the end of your content. If you have just given advice on a product then the reader will be naturally incline to look for links to this product and Adsense will display ads which are relevant to your topic (most of the time). If you have a sidebar you will want to make it large enough to take 336 x 280 rectangles. I haven’t found the header ads next to the logo effective inside a blog. I think people are more inclined to skip the header and focus more on the title and body area of your blog.
Here is an example of the layout I have found best for my websites:
Optimized Blog Adsense Layout
Optimized Blog Adsense Layout
If you have a 3 column layout then the skyscraper blocks will work well. These work the best when you have them in the natural navigation areas, so usually on the left above the page fold. Here are the layouts I have found the best:
Optimized 3 column Adsense Layout
Optimized 3 column Adsense Layout
4. Use Link units and also Google Custom Search. The link units are great and often look similar to navigation bars. The best placement is usually in areas close to where you would expect navigation buttons. Though revenue is not earned when this is click, it’s only earned when the user clicks a link on search page it navigates to. These work surprisingly well. Custom search is great, on one of my sites I have a wordpress blog and forum so rather than using the inbuilt search systems in both the different applications I can use the best search tool available – Google. The best part is that you can create a custom search page, so the results look like they are within your own website. You make revenue when someone clicks a sponsored link in the search results. I find this has a very high CTR and also it helps my site with a great site wide search bar. The best placement for this varies according to the type of page. For instance on a page filled with articles and links you should put the search bar in a very obvious area and make it large, so users can easily search. For general pages usually the search bar is found on the right side near the navigation bar. I find users find it easy there.
5. Make sure you style the ads to fit in with your websites color and layout. Playing around with the color of your font on the ads is important and can often be overlooked or done terribly. The trick is to make the title a shade brighter than the titles on your website, keep the body copy black or a dark grey, make the link the same color as your links on your website and background and border should be the same color as the background behind them.
These are just 5 tips on how I managed to increase the CTR for my websites. You will need to play around with your layout and also the color of the adsense ads you use. Do lots of testing as its worth spending a few days ou need to make sure that your ads adhere to the strict Adsense rules.

Google AdSense Testing Extremely Wide Arrows

by

Google recently changed the format for the arrows on AdSense ads to be a thin arrow on a block background color. Google is constantly messing with the AdSense design in order to keep click-through-rates higher on those ads.
The next test being reported is extremely wide arrows on AdSense units. I am personally not able to replicate it but there is a discussion going on in WebmasterWorld with two different Google publishers noticing it. One posted a screen shot of the ad, but blurred it out, so it is a bit hard to make out.
Here is that screen shot:

Make a list of some popular blogs in your niche that are getting enough traffic especially from these countries (Check out their Alexa stats). Follow those blogs, comment on their blog posts andbuild better relationships with the blog owners. Do the same for atleast one month. After that, send them a polite request to write a guest post for them. Once your request gets approved, you are ready to drive foreign traffic.
Write and submit your best articles there and see the results. You’ll surely notice a good amount of traffic landing to your blog from High paying Google Adsense countries. More traffic = More Money! icon biggrin Google Adsense Income Boosters – Three Most Effective Strategies

Time Efficient Ways to Make Money Using AdSense

One of the most common ways that people do to generate income  is by learning how to make money fast online using adsense. It is one of the money making website ideas .I’m pretty much certain that you’ve already heard a lot about this subject matter. But if you still want to know more in-depth details about Google AdSense, just read on and who knows, this simple article might just open doors to greater opportunity for you.

Get Money Now – What You Need to Know About Google AdSense

What is Google AdSense? Before anything else, let us know what Google AdSense is all about. Basically, Google AdSense is a simple way for website owners to earn  money at home by posting and displaying targeted Google advertisements in their sites. As an advertising program initiated by Google, one of the most popular search engines, it serves the purpose of being a mediator between a large number of website owners and an equally enormous number of advertisers. So how does AdSense work and how will you be able to earn income from it? Before you learn the exact method on how to make money using Google  adsense, let us first understand the process how adsense operates. In order to be able to put up in the net what they want to promote, advertisers need to sign up with Google and then make the text ads that they would want to show online. Google will then display these advertisements on the various results pages that show up whenever people search something through the Google search engine. These advertisers pay a significant amount to Google every time one of their advertisements gets clicked by internet users. To further spread the advertisements on the net and in order for them to have a higher probability of getting viewed or clicked, Google pays various sites to host those ads. This is where you come in. As a blog or website owner, you can successfully make money from home by hosting these adsense ads. By doing so, you can get paid  a portion of Google’s revenues from what the advertisers pay them by displaying those advertisements in your blog or website and have visitors or readers effectively click those adsense ads.
Google Adsense Online Guide – How to Get Paid Online  Using  Google AdSense
1. Create a blog or website with a profitable niche First of all, getting started with Google AdSense will involve establishing your own blog or website because this will serve as the main avenue for placing adsense ads. The good news here is that you can now find a lot of blog sites that allow people to create their own blogs for free. Selecting a particular niche for your blog or website is a very crucial factor in generating traffic and eventually, in increasing your probability to generate income. Actually, you can choose any topic that you would want to develop – practically anything under the sun is eligible. However, if you would really want to be able to attract a lot of visitors on your site, increase traffic and be able to make money online, you will have to choose not just any niche but most importantly, a profitable one. So what exactly is a profitable niche? Basically, a profitable niche is one that gets a large volume of visitors or readers. It is essentially composed of topics about things that the majority of people would want to know about – something that would capture their interest because it covers not just their needs but their wants as well. Another reason why you should take your time considering a profitable niche is because Google AdSense will only display adsense ads which are relevant to your page. So basically, if your page is about gardening, then advertisements which are related to gardening will be the ones displayed on your site. So when it comes to the finest ideas for making money with adsense ads, you should always ask this question to yourself: ‘Would people be interested in clicking the ads in my site?’ This should do the trick. By having more and more visitors to your blog, you will then be able to increase your chances of having more people click your adsense ads. And this will further provide you with a much higher earning potential.
2.Sign up for a free account at Google AdSense One thing that you have to keep in mind before sending an application at Google AdSense is to have some reliable and valuable content in your blog or site. You should see to it that your blog’s articles do not only provide helpful and interesting information to readers but should be free of any grammatical and spelling errors as well. This is very crucial in your endeavor on how to make money from adsense. So now, if you think that your website is already equipped with enough high-quality content, then you may now register with Google AdSense. After completing the registration process, you will then have to register every page of your site so that ads can be placed on your pages. Finally, when your application has already been approved, Google AdSense will provide you with a piece of HTML code which you should place onto your pages where you would want the adsense ads to appear.
3. Generate traffic with your blog or site’s content It is true that profitable niches tend to have more competition involved with it. One way to still be able to have more exposure and generate more traffic is to develop interesting and high-quality content. This is a very important factor that must be remembered on how to make money online for beginners and professionals alike. The articles in your blog should not only contain relevant information but it should also be well presented. You must try to see to it that you are able to deliver comprehensible and error-free articles to your readers. This way, you will not only be able to attract more visitors but be able to retain the loyalty of the current ones as well. Always bear in mind that the higher traffic you generate with your blog or site, the higher your earning potential becomes. So try to attract and accommodate as much visitors as possible.
4. Invest some time and effort in enhancing your blog or site’s design The overall appearance of your site is also a great factor in attracting and retaining visitors. So if you want to learn how to make money with your blog or site, then you must also be ready to devote some of your time and give as much effort as you can in order to improve its design and presentation. Your site should be able to display ads, articles and other contents in an organized manner. An unsatisfied reader will most likely leave a confusing blog right away so you might as well take some time to polish the look of your blog. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, flashy or too colorful. Having an attractive blog is a matter of mixing all the elements in the right manner.
Visitors should be able to easily find their way around the blog. They must be able to navigate through it while knowing exactly where to go and what to find. So in short, just keep it simple, organized, and most of all, professional but still with a personal touch.
Since one of our main goals here is to be able to utilize adsense ads to make money online for beginners and experts as well, your blog or site should deeply consider the placement of your ads. Strategic placement of ads is indeed very crucial for your proceeds. If you are able to make your ads more visible on your blog or site, then this can significantly increase the number of clicks you’ll get.
The best places where to put your ads are in the upper half of your page and in the text, to name just a few. However, if you want to try other methods as well, then you can always try to experiment by putting your ads on different places on your site and then try to see which of those methods have been the most effective. Other things that you can experiment with regarding adsense ads are the ad colors and sizes. You may also try to compare image ads with text ads and see which of them is more effective.
Making use of Google AdSense to make money online for free  could become a very major breakthrough in your online career. To somehow ensure success in this chosen career filed however, you have to see to it that you comply with Google’s terms and conditions all the time.
Just like any other job or business, working with Google will also involve building strong relationships. Trust is very important here as well. So if you are indeed interested to generate income with Google adsense ads, then try to do so with the right mentality and sincere intentions in mind. Giving some effort to do things the right way all the time is always very important in making your way towards success. This is one of the best methods how to make money online fast and free because Google just places ads on your website and you start getting paid.
