How To Immediately Increase Your AdSense Clicks

Would you like to make one tiny addition to your web pages and increase the chances of getting the AdSense ads clicked by up to three times?


It's laughingly simple, yet the effect can be immediate.


All you need is to get some colorful digital photographs, either from your own stock or from a royalty free web site. Then using a graphics program, such as Real Draw PRO or Photoshop, create a strip of four rectangular photographs with a space in between each. The overall size of the strip should be 728 pixels wide by about 108 pixels deep. The size of the pictures should be about 140 pixels wide by whatever depth you choose for the picture strip.


The content of the pictures should be relevant to the content of your web site. In order not to violate Google's Terms Of Service, you should avoid pictures that are animated, advertisements or induce the visitor to click on the AdSense ads. If you are in any doubt, take a look at the ads on my web site or check with Google's Terms Of Service.


The background color should exactly match the color of your AdSense pages. It helps if you can place a narrow blue border around the individual photo (but not around the entire strip). This arrangement is ideal for a page containing an article and the best position within the page for the picture strip is at the top of the page, immediately below the page headline, but above the start of the body text.


Once you have done this, go to your Google AdSense advert codes and select the one for leaderboard, which is 728 pixels wide by 90 pixels deep. If the 728 pixel width sounds vaguely familiar, it's the exact width of your picture strip. Make sure you delete the border before pasting your leaderboard code under the picture strip, save the page and load it to your server and start enjoying up to three times the clicks on that style of ad.


If you already have the maximum number of three AdSense blocks on the pages, where you insert this picture strip/leaderboard combo, do be sure to delete one of the existing ad groups, so you don't violate Google's Terms Of Service, which only allow three ad blocks per page.

Pst! Wanna know some Adsense secrets? The only secret is that there are no secrets per se!

Do a search for Adsense secrets and you will be bombarded by a myriad of ads by trying to sell you the answers to making lots of money with Adsense.

Before you buy anything, my advise to you would be to do some research on a search engine and a bit of common sense. There are literally hundreds of forums where you can pick up valuable information, as well as hundreds of articles that have been written on the subject of Adsense.

Most of the answers are out there for you to find it you will put in a little bit of work. If you buy any of the ebooks available out there, you might find one little nugget of information that you may not have seen anywhere else, but I promise you: most of the time everything is out here on the Internet - all you have to do is search for it. Here are some of the search terms that I personally have used with great results:

What I can tell you from my own experience is this:

1. Ads at the top of the page and on the left of the page perfom better than any other ads. (Take a look at the "heatmap" from the Google link below)

2. Ads without background colour and borders perfom better than ads within borders with background colour.

3. Ads within content pages perform better than any other ads.

4. A search box on every page gives you another chance for earning Adsense income.

5. A blue link at the top of the ad, the ad in black, and the url also in black so that it blends in with the ad copy - also tends to perform well. A black url makes the link stand out and gives you a better chance of someone clicking on it.

Experiment with your settings and see which brings you the best results. Google's reporting has become a lot better in the last month or so, so you should instantly be able to see which ads result in better CTR.

To increase your site traffic, which obviously will increase your Adsense income, the best way to get traffic is to have fresh content at your site. Write your own articles and submit it to article directories like Go Articles etc. To find more article directories, just do a search for "free article directory submissions" on a search engine like Google.

Another way would be to publish articles by other authors that are relevant to your site content. You can find free articles all over the web by once again doing a search for e.g. "free site content".

Do this on a regular basis and watch your traffic (and your income) increase.

In this article I want to give you a few simple ways to dramatically increase your AdSense income.

To increase AdSense income all you must do is increase the number of click thrus you receive.

There are two ways for you to increase your total number of click thrus. You can either increase your website traffic or you can increase your AdSense click thru rate. Now this is one that I rarely see webmasters take advantage of. The Google AdSense program gives webmasters the ability to add a Google search box to there web site.

Why should you use this function?

Well, when a website visitor chooses to use this search box from your website your AdSense ID will be imbedded in ALL of that visitors Google searches. If that person does 1 search or 50 your AdSense ID will still be imbedded throughout process.

Why is this so great?

If that visitor clicks on any of the sponsored listings while surfing from your web site guess who makes money. YOU! If they hit the back button and click on another ad guess who makes money? YOU! This is absolutely huge. Through this function you now have the ability to earn multiple click thrus from the same visitor on the site visit. Please don’t overlook how powerful this is. Besides, most of your website traffic will just be browsing anyway, so I why help them find what there looking for and make a little coin along the way?

Tracking:

Just like any other type of marketing, you won’t know what’s working the best for you on your web site unless you track the different things that you’re experimenting with. Set up a few Google AdSense channels for the different ads that you’ll be placing on your website. Then just see which channels are working the best and stick to those.

How Not to Get the Dreaded Termination Email from Google

Recently Google went on a banning spree. Hundreds, possibly thousands of webmasters got a short email from Google’s Adsense department informing them of their account’s termination. One only has to look through any popular webmaster message boards and tales of woe abound from those cast off the island.

The cleaning up of the Adsense publisher base seems to have given rise to alternate Adsense programs. Some of these, while boasting better payouts, might not have the same ad quality as Adsense. If you’re no longer a part of Adsense or just want to try something new, you can find some of these alternates in a downloadable format on my site or on the web by searching.

There are ways to prevent your account being terminated. One should always familiarize themselves with Adsense TOS (Terms of Service) and send Google and email on any situations you’re unsure about. Some of the better known ways to avoid termination are:

* Check your server logs frequently for any abnormal activity. If you’re using cPanel, I recommend AWstats. Looks for abnormal spikes in traffic on days and compare against your CTR on Adsense. Anything that looks fishy ask Google to investigate. You might want to offer the use of your server logs for their investigation at the same time.

* Use monitoring software to track clicks on your site. You can get this free by searching online. There are a few out there. I’ll compile a list of the more popular ones in a later entry. You can use this to help Google get rid of click fraud by catching suspicious activity first and reporting it to them.

* Don’t click on your own ads or encourage others to do the same. Goes without saying. Also avoid checking your Adsense account on public machines or from behind a proxy with any number of users. Should another user on a public machine click on your ads then it registers as an owner click since the IPs are the same. Same goes for machines behind a proxy. Lets say you work in a company with a few hundred users and have an internal network. In all likelihood the external IPs are a small range. This means that Google will see only the IP addresses that are assigned by the company’s service provider. If anyone else on that network clicks on your ads, you stand a chance of being banned as Google will see the clicks coming from the same place.

* Don’t put Adsense ads on empty pages or with adult or gambling content. Again, self explanatory. Google will catch you sooner than you think. Just remember, their technology can display ads based on your content. If your content is against their TOS, you’re gone. This also includes having their ads on pup-ups or pop-unders, be careful with this one if you’re purchasing traffic. Use of artificial means of traffic generation such as traffic exchanges will get you kicked out. Some successful blog owners have suggested using traffic exchanges before putting Adsense on your site. This way you get some exposure and maybe some repeat vistors before you implement Adsense.

* If you make a mistake. Let them know. If its really an honest mistake and you haven’t been clicking on your own ads for a while then you should be able to get a reprieve. Its easier than asking for reinstatement.

To close, these are just some points to follow. Google can change their TOS at anytime and they do seem to ban people in certain periods more heavily. Some say near the 15th which is their payout date. Keep your nose clean and you should be able to continue making Adsense work for you.

Making Money With Google AdWords

As an affiliate marketer, you can make money without having a website of your own. You don't have to create a mailing list, newsletter, write articles and custom content, or anything else for that matter.

Making money with affiliate programs is as simple as advertising. That's it. If you can drive traffic to an affiliate product through your affiliate link, you can make money.

This is usually done using the Google AdWords system. You place ads on Google, and you pay only for clicks on those ads.

Now of course there's a lot more to it than that. Advertising on Google can be complicated, frustrating, and expensive if not done right. It takes a lot of trial and error usually too.

One of the first questions new affiliate have is "How can I advertise without a website?" Well the answer to that is simple. When you sign up for an affiliate program, you're given a special tracking URL, or website address. This URL is what the affiliate program uses to know when you've sent traffic to them, and when you've made sales and earned commissions.

The Google AdWords system allows you to use that affiliate URL in your advertisements. There are a couple of minor rules you have to follow. One of these rules says you must have some indication in your ad that you're using an affiliate link. This can be done by simply putting "aff" or "affiliate" at the end of your ad.

You don't want to use your affiliate link for the display URL though. Put the affiliate link into the destination URL of your Google advertisement, then put the main affiliate site address into the display section. This way you have a nice looking, relevant display link showing, and this helps make your ads more appealing to searchers.

Google does have certain rules about using affiliate links in your ads though. Primarily, they don't want pages stuffed full of affiliate links. So their system is designed to only show one at a time. If you're the only affiliate advertising a certain product, then your ad will be displayed as often as possible. If however, there are 5 other people advertising the same affiliate program AND using their direct affiliate link, Google will rotate your ad with theirs.

Because of this rotation rule, your ads may not be displayed as often and of course it may take longer for you to drive enough traffic to the affiliate site and make sales. This is a fine tradeoff when you're first starting out though, particularly if you don't have a website and don't know how to get one started.

Google Adwords Success Tips Vol. 1

When you use Google Adwords and can’t be certain of what keyword matching option you must use, then you can enter all three variations you have in your keywords list. For instance:

After using them for some time you can check the clickthrough rates of the keywords and delete the ineffective keyword combinations.

Always use the negative keywords feature. For example if someone uses the search term “free art posters” then you should use the negative keyword –free in the Google appropriate field and in result your keyword “Art Poster” will not be displayed.

By doing that you avoid the freebie seekers who are not targeted in your offer and as result you improve your clickthrough rates and reduce the cost of your campaigns. You can also use similar with the “free” term such as:

-no charge
-no cost
-costless
-chargeless


and so on.

The keywords number factor. The age of creating an ad group and load 4000 keywords instantly is over. Although there is not a specific rule for how many keywords you should use, follow Google’s recommendations on the amount of keywords. Google recommends: maximum 100 Ad groups per campaign and 750 keywords per Ad group.

Targeted but not over targeted. So many people loose money because of that reason. If you have yoga training center in Florida it’s obvious that people from New York won’t be interested in your services. So displaying a general term such as “Yoga” or even “Yoga training center” will display your ad on Google Adwords and prospects with no interest in your offer will click your Ad which means extra cost for your campaigns and not transformed into sales.

On the other hand if you use a specific term like:

“Yoga Training Center in Florida”

You have more targeted clickthroughs, targeted prospects and eventually more sales.

But there is a drawback on that tactic. If you are extremely targeted and use a keyword of over 6-7 words it’s highly possible that no one will search for that term and have no clicks or even views for your Ad.

How to find keywords? You could use the Google keyword suggestion tool but because so many other Adwords users use it, the keywords from that tool are very expensive.

Other tools you can use are:

These tools are free but if you want a more sophisticated and advanced option you can use word tracker paid service: http://www.wordtracker.com

Use always the plural form of your words. Don’t use “Yoga Training Report” but also “Yoga Training Reports”.

Exploit the misspelling errors. Research indicates the 12%-15% of the search phrases and words are misspelled. So don’t use only the term “staff” but also “stuff”.

Use hyphens. For example use both terms like: “Yoga Training Center” and “Yoga-Training-Center”

Use Acronyms: If you use the phrase “internet service provider” in your campaigns you can also use the acronym ISP in your Ads.

Use of domain names. This is powerful because it’s the most targeted term you can find. If your website’s domain name is www.yogatrainingcenter.com you must use it as keyword term.

I see article marketing and Google Adwords at the opposite ends of a spectrum that contains many elements that impact the effectiveness of your marketing.

What are some of the differences?

Article marketing creates a very high quality visitor or subscriber, because the visitor or subscriber has already been exposed to you and your style before they visit your web site or opt in to your list.

Google Adwords, on the other hand, creates a much lower quality subscriber, almost by default. What do I mean, default? You see, with Google Adwords, the visitor has only a few seconds to make a decision about whether to click the link. So they make an impulsive decision. They click just to see what you have. And whether they need it or not it just cost you 50 cents or a dollar or whatever. But with article marketing, there is no cost involved in losing the person who doesn’t like what you offer.

Article marketing is slow to get going. You write a few articles, and get a few visitors or subscribers. Some days your article gets picked up by a publisher, and other days it does not. So your visitors are sporadic.

Google Adwords, on the other hand, can easily be dialed up to create massive visitorship immediately. If you want 1000 visitors and can afford it, you can get the visitors in a hurry. You can use Google Adwords for fast testing of headlines and closing percentages.

So what should you use? I think it depends on what you need. If you need subscribers or visitors in a hurry so you can test or win a contest, then use Google Adwords. But if you want high-quality visitors or subscribers, then write articles. Use a balance of both. The more time you have, the easier it is to use articles. When you are short on time and still need the traffic, use Google Adwords.

Pay per click ads are those that you see on the right hand side of search engine results pages. You pay a predetermined amount every time someone see your ad and clicks on it. With pay pe click advertising, you are able to reach an extremely wide audience. The internet is world wide and you can choose to have your ads shown world wide or pick the countries you want to advertise in. It is important when using pay per click advertising to have a strong understanding of keywords and how they are used. If you learn to utilize keywords effectively, you have a much better chance of receiving quality targeted traffic to your website. For example, if your website sells dog shampoo, if you quite an ad and target the keyword dog, you will likely receive a lot of traffic , but it will be incredibly untargeted. A person might put in dog in a search engine and the information they are looking for is about the different types of dogs, not dog shampoo. There was a time, not long ago, when all it took to be a successful affiliate marketer was to carefully choose a product or service, put together an AdWords campaign, and make the destination URL your affiliate link. You didn’t even need your own website to be successful. This process of direct linking came to be known as the “Google Cash” method. While the AdWords game is no longer as simple as it once was it is still worth playing.

These days the AdWords game has gotten a lot more complex. And while it’s in your best interest to become familiar with the other pay-per-click options, for now, Google’s AdWords is the undisputed king of the hill.

The key to success in playing the AdWords game is knowledge. You must acquire a fundamental understanding of how the AdWords system works and stay abreast of all the latest changes to the program. On top of that you must stay in the know on the latest techniques for taking advantage of the system. This includes blackhat tactics, whether you choose to use them or not.

In the midst of all the AdWords minutiae it is vitally important not to lose sight of the fact that AdWords is just a tool. Remember, your goal is to drive traffic to your chosen site. Mastering a few of the other approaches to generating traffic will strengthen the foundation of your affiliate business.

Always remember, AdWords is ever-evolving; first they cracked down on direct linking, decimating the “Google Cash” cow, and now they’re going after link cloaking and affiliate mini-sites that lack, in their view (the only one that matters), sufficient content. Who knows if or when they’ll go after directories? The bottom line is you need a multitude of weapons in your arsenal: search engine optimization, AdWords and other pay-per-click options, classified ads, forum posting, ezine advertising, articles, rapid mini-site creation, press releases, viral, blackhat, and anything else that comes along. In short, be prepared for whatever may come, and sufficiently diversified in your approach to promoting your products.

Google Adwords - Don't Make Assumptions You Can No Longer Afford

I made a post in a forum the other day, posing a small conundrum about which Google Adwords ad should be kept and which should be discarded based on the CTR figures which each Ad managed to achieve.

And it's interesting how different people measure the success, or otherwise, of their Google Adwords campaigns. I'm always advocating testing, but there has to be a few caveats when you run tests.

The example which I gave in the forum was as follows, and was based on an actual campaign that I had managed for a client in the past.

Imagine you have an Adwords group with two ads running with optimisation turned off, i.e. Google Adwords will just distribute the search traffic uniformally between your two ad creatives. After 160 you can see that Ad A has a CTR of 6.8% and Ad B has a CTR of 1.2%

Now the question is, which ad do you run with? Which one do you axe?

When the client saw the stats he immediately said we should remove Ad B because it wasn't performing well enough.

Oh dear.

Obviously he hadn't listened to a word I had said about how to manage a successful Adwords campaign. Ho hum.

Yes, CTR is important, but not as important as ROI. Return On Investment.

What's the point in buying a ton of traffic if all it does is burn a hole in your wallet? You need sales to run a business, not clicks.

"Oh yes. Well what's the ROI figures then?" he asks, as if he knew this was what he was meant to say all along.

Well, Ad A had a conversion rate of 0.9%, whereas Ad B had a conversion rate of 9.4%

"Delete Ad A immediately," was his suggestion.

Is this what you would have done? I didn't.

The fact that the conversions didn't actually have a significant monetary value wasn't the point, because anyone who runs their own list knows that it's not always about the initial sale that's important, but the value of a customer over a whole lifetime.

Looking at it on the surface, and now that I've revealed that ROI is more important than CTR, you would expect to delete Ad A and run with the Ad B because of its high conversion rate.

Well, look again, my student.

You see, to read anything into the adverts that we test day in and day out, you always have to ensure that you make decisions that are based on statistical significance.

In the example, extrapolating the figures, you'll realise that we have the following:

Ad A, CTR = 6.8%, so for 2000 impressions that's 136 clicks. Conversion = 0.9% which results in 1 conversion for 2000 impressions.

Ad B, CTR = 1.2%, so for 2000 impressions that's 24 clicks. Conversion = 9.4% which results in 2 conversions for 2000 impressions.

3 conversions for our test. Is that a significant number of results for us to base our findings on?

NO.

Nowhere near enough data.

For a *minimum* we need at least 5 measurements in each group, that's 5 conversions for each Adwords Ad creative, before we can even start to run significance testing.

Of course, running Taguchi methods for multivariate split-testing would deliver a significant improvement over the simple A/B split test.

The benefit? It allows you to take the elements of the test which provide the most significant influence on the result. And in the example, it was neither Ad A nor Ad B that came out as the winner, but a subtle blend of the two.

Isn't science wonderful?

I just wish I had stayed awake longer during my stats lessons at school so that I didn't have to pay a ton of money on learning it all over again.

So just remember, when you come to measure your ad performance, make sure you have enough data to come to a statistically significant conclusion. It'll save you a ton of cash, I promise.

Pay per click advertising is one of the most popular internet marketing methods used today. Pay per click marketing is when you, as the affiliate marketer, place an ad on one of the major search engines. Most commonly this is Google and you place your ad using Google Adwords. When someone searches for the product you are promoting , if they use one of your keywords, your ad will appear on the right hand side. If they click on your ad and then make a purchase, you earn a commission. You do pay every time someone clicks on your ad whether they make a purchase or not.

Here are some tips on pay per click advertising:

1. After you have decided on the product you wish to promote, start your keyword search. Write down every possible keyword you can think of for the product. Use a keyword generating tool if you have one available.

2. Divide the keywords up into related areas. You will use each keyword section to create a targeted ad.

3. Come up with your ad headline. Use a keyword from your keyword sections in the headline.

4. Create your ad description. Use you keyword in the description as well. Your ad should be relevant to your keyword.

5. Set your budget. Determine your maximum per click. Assume it will take between 75-100 clicks to make a sale so set your budget accordingly. Start small. You can always increase it if you want to later.

6. Set up multiple ads focusing on one set of keywords per ad. You will then get more targeted traffic.

Don’t give up! It may take awhile before your campaigns start to show a profit. You need to hang in there!! Make sure you are comfortable with your budget because not all your campaigns will be profitable. You don’t want to go through your budget before you have made your first sale. Set up one campaign at a time and monitor it until it becomes profitable or you determine it won’t be. Then move on to the next. You will maintain more control this way. If you start too many campaigns at once, it is easy to spend more then you are profiting. Especially in the beginning.

15 Minutes A Day? Yeah, Right

You see ads all over the internet claiming that you can make hundreds of dollars a day while only spending 15 minutes of your time. Are they serious? There is only one profession I can think of that you can make that type of money that fast, and it sure isn’t affiliate marketing!

So what does it mean when you see “15 Minutes a Day” and “Start Earning 15 minutes From Now.”? What it means is simply this, with this type of affiliate marketing, you are advertising using pay per click marketing. While it is true that you simply type a few lines of information into an online form and you can start making money, there is also a great deal more to it then that. And yes, there are absolutely thousands of companies who are willing to pay you a commission as an affiliate. But in order to make your commission, a customer needs to make a purchase through your affiliate link. That sounds easy enough, but keep in mind that it generally takes about 75-100 clicks on your ad before you make a sale.

Pay per click advertising can be expensive. Especially for the new internet marketer who hasn’t learned a system yet. I highly recommend one of the affiliate marketing guides available on the internet if you are getting started in affiliate pay per click marketing. Learn from my mistake. I thought I could teach myself how to do it and ended up with a big adwords bill and only two sales. No profits. In the red. So I put my pay per click efforts on hold for a while. When I came back to it, I was smarter and invested in a guide and I have been in profit ever since. I am not making hundreds of dollars a day yet, but in time, I hope to get there.

The claim that you can start making money 15 minutes from now, while technically true, is way overstated. What hey mean is that your ads will start running, at least using Google Adwords, about 15 minutes after you finish setting up your campaigns. Although it is certainly possible for your ad to run, someone to click on it and purchase the product all in the first 15 minutes, it is not very likely. Most people need at least a couple of hours if not days before they start getting results with their pay per click campaigns.

15 minutes a day? Not likely. Affiliate marketing can be profitable though if you put in the time and effort necessary. Maybe someday, you can only spend 15 minutes a day checking your bank account balances, but when you are first starting out, it will take a great deal more effort.

These ads are created by Google for large corporate advertisers who rely on Google employees to produce PPC ads for them. Use Negative Keywords

In many instances you can get very targeted keyword traffic for as low as .05 to 10 cents per click. When someone clicks on your ad you are billed for that click. The more clicks, the more traffic, the more you are going to pay.

What has happened as the pay per click search engine industry has matured is the price for one click has gone beyond the ability for the average webmaster to afford it. If you have a website in a popular category you could be paying $1.00, $5.00, $10.00 or more for one click. Unless you have deep pockets it is hard to compete against the larger websites who have a large budget to work with each month.

PPC Advertising - The Hidden Cost

I recently held an internet marketing seminar at a WW2 spy school. The perfect setting, as the subject was internet marketing by stealth. A short while later, I began to think Google had sent an undercover agent to spy on us.


Probably not, but it certainly seemed like it. because a week or so after my seminar, Google had their famous clampdown on AdWord advertisers, who do not provide proper content on their landing pages.


So out went squeeze pages, bald affiliate sites (with no added value, just an affiliate link), mini sites consisting of a single sales page and so called arbitrage sites,where the visitor arrives only to be confronted with a website stuffed with Google AdWords!


I apologise to my Australian cousins, but we've all heard the joke about the Australian chat up line, which consists of three words: "Brace yourself, Shelia!". On the day of the seminar, everyone rocked with laughter when I said that -- but that's exactly what you're doing, if you use AdWords just to bring prospects straight to your sales page.


Worse than that, it's actually costing you big bucks! Here's why: courting. If you're of a certain age, you might understand that word and you may even remember the movie "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and the glee they showed when they were "Going courting!". If you're younger, you might know it as dating.


Marketing is exactly like courting and dating. It must be conducted slowly and purposefully, to allow your potential customer to get to know you. If done correctly, you will gain far more customers over the longer term and they will remain loyal to you.


So how is AdWords costing you big bucks?


It's all down to how you treat your visitors, when they arrive at your site. If you give them some information -- perhaps an article -- that dovetails precisely with the promise made in your Google ad, they will be more inclined to stay on your site. If the content you give them is good, they will be more inclined to trust you. They may even sign up for your newsletter or mini course. They may even buy from you -- none of which they would have done if you had catapulted them straight from the AdWords ad into your sales page, without this essential pre-selling.

An Overview of Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising

Pay per click (PPC) advertising has revolutionized advertising on the Internet. In order to understand PPC advertising, let’s discuss PPC, its history, and some background information.

Let’s start our discussion with a definition of pay per click advertising from Wikipedia.

Pay per click (PPC) is an advertising technique used on websites, advertising networks, and search engines.

With search engines, pay per click advertisements are usually text ads placed near search results; when a site visitor clicks on the advertisement, the advertiser is charged a small amount. Variants include pay for placement and pay for ranking. Pay per click is also sometimes known as Cost Per Click (CPC).

While many companies exist in this space, Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing, which was formerly Overture, are the largest network operators as of 2006. MSN has started beta testing with their own PPC services MSN adCenter. Depending on the search engine, minimum prices per click start at US$0.01 (up to US$0.50). Very popular search terms can cost much more on popular engines. Abuse of the pay per click model can result in click fraud.

Pay per click advertising covers the three main search engines, but let’s concentrate on Google since it has the largest market share of searches on the Net. Pay per click advertising is where an advertiser creates an ad for a product or service that will be presented to a search engine (“SE”) user when the user searches on a specific key word or key word phrase. When you use an SE, you see the ads when you receive the results of the search. You have noticed that the ads are about the same information that you entered into the search. This is based on the keywords for which the ads are targeted.

The advertiser that puts the ad in the SE agrees that it will pay a certain amount to the SE each time the ad is clicked by a user. The order of presentation of the ads on the search engine results page depends on the price that the advertiser agrees to pay and the historical click-through rates of all ads shown for a given search.

This advertising concept has revolutionized Internet advertising and has created Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing, and Microsoft Adcenter. In 2000 Google was the first to start a program of this type and it has developed into Google’s flagship product from which it derives the majority of its revenue.

Originally, Google permitted the Adwords ad to send the user directly to the advertisers site. Early in 2005, the policy changed and now you must link from the Google ad to a “landing page” (page where the searcher will be directed when the ad is clicked). The landing page is used to presell the readers and then send them on to the sales page of the company selling the service or product.

PPC advertising is a great way to make money as an affiliate. You identify a company that you want to promote, identify the keywords that searchers will use when searching for the company’s products, and set up a landing web page to receive the click from the SE. On the landing page, you place ad copy to sell the reader on clicking to the company’s site that you are representing. If the user clicks to the company site and takes the desired action (purchasing a product or completing a lead form), you are paid for the completion of the action. This will be a percent of the sale of a product or a flat payment for a sales lead.

Anyone can sign up for these programs and it is quite easy to do so. You can make money using this technique. However, before you think this will make you rich overnight, let’s get a little education on how it works.

When an SE presents your ad to a user, it is called an “impression”. When a user clicks on the ad, it is called a “click”. The SE develops a ratio called the click through rate (CTR) by dividing the clicks by the impressions. If your CTR remains high enough (this varies by SE’s, but usually above one percent is sufficient), your ad will continue to run. If it does not perform well, the SE will inactivate it until you change something about the ad to make it perform better.

Your account with the PPC program will have reports that show you the impressions, the clicks, the CTR. It will also show you your average cost per click, the total cost for the keyword (clicks time average cost), and the average position of the ad in the times it was displayed (first, second, third, etc.).

The best way to learn about PPC advertising is to set up an account on Google Adwords and experiment with a campaign. You can set a budget to prevent the campaign from costing you too much if your campaign results in your paying more for clicks than you make from your sales. Economics of Pay Per Click Advertising

Pay per click (PPC) advertising has revolutionized advertising on the Internet. This allows for very targeted advertising to Internet users who are searching for the particular item that is being advertised. Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing are the two major PPC programs on the Internet today. Microsoft AdCenter is a recent newcomer to PPC programs.

It is easy to set up an advertising campaign under these programs, but one must be cautious and make good business decisions about the campaign. The intent is to make money rather than pay Google, Yahoo, or AdCenter more than you make.

When evaluating the potential profit from a PPC program, you will only be charged for the times that the user clicks your ad. However, there is another variable that you must consider which is called conversion rate (CR). This is the number of users who click the ad divided into the number of users who actually buy the product. A rough rule of thumb for CR is five (5) percent.

You need to project the economics of the campaign before you launch it. If you have a low cost per click (CPC) and the commission from your affiliate company is high, you can afford a campaign with a low conversion rate. On the contrary, if the commission per transaction from the affiliate company is low, and the CPC is high, you need a conversion rate that is high.

It is a matter of simple math to project the results of a sales campaign.

Profit per click = ($ per sale X Conversion rate) - (Average cost per click)

Let’s plug in some numbers and see how this works. Assume that the selling commission is $5.00, the conversion rate is 5%, and the average cost per click is $.10. Multiply the selling commission ($5.00) by the CR of 5% to get $.25. Subtract the cost per click (CPC) of $.10 from $.25 and you get a profit of $.15. This does not seem like a lot of money, but the Internet is viewed 24/7 so if you have 1000 clicks per month and convert 5% of them, you will make $150 for setting up the campaign and then monitoring it occasionally. If you set up several of these campaigns for different key words, you can make a nice supplemental income.

In summary, always do your homework and make solid assumptions about your campaign. Do the math so you are not surprised by a campaign that costs you money rather than making you money.

Adsense or Affliate Marketing - which is best for you?

Although I'm a big AdSense fan, I also realize that there are
other ways to make money online. Readers often ask me which
is better, AdSense or affiliate selling, and so here are my
thoughts on this very interesting question.

The short answer is "it depends". Now, you might think that's
a cop-out, but it's not. Let's go back to the fundamentals.

What is AdSense? It's an online billboard rental program, that's
what it is. Say you have (as Monty Python put it) "HUGE tracts
and tracts of ... land", except of course that the "land" is the
set of web pages that you control on your various sites. Along
comes Google who says "Hey, we'd like to put some billboards on
your land. We'll then go find some advertisers who'll display
their ads on the billboards and give you a cut of the money we
make by renting out the billboards. And don't worry, we'll take
care of finding and billing the advertisers -- all you do is sit
back and rake in the cash." You get to say where the billboards
are placed on your land (though Google is happy to give you some
suggestions based on what they know works for other land owners)
and how big they are, but you have no specific control over what
goes on the billboards. Overall the program sounds pretty good to
you, because it lets you spend your time and effort on other
things, such as acquiring more land. It's passive income to the
extreme.

PPC Advertising: On the Road to Organic Traffic

I have always been an advocate of using Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising as a short-term solution to a long-term objective. The use of a fully optimized site is a vitally important part of site growth and reasonable organic traffic.

This thought is borne out in a finding by WebSideStory that indicates that PPC advertising provided a conversion rate of 3.4% while sites relying on organic (optimized) sites saw a conversion rate of 3.13%. The study began in January of 2006 and ran for eight months and more than 57 million search engine visits were used to document the findings.

A combination of both techniques may improve the overall conversion rate, but much of the decision-making you are faced with has to do with perceived value.

For instance, if your business is relatively new and you are waiting for the various search engines to find you and rank your site you may discover PPC advertising to be a primary tool in client conversion. If, however, you are ranked well in search engines you may not feel a compelling need to purchase PPC advertising or if you do your marketing budget may be reduced in size.

The temptation is to simply rely on PPC advertising without working toward proper optimization of your site. I suppose on one level this may make sense IF you are only interested in purchasing PPC advertising for the duration of your business.

Essentially if you are willing to provide some work at the beginning of your site design to develop proper optimization techniques you will ultimately save money in the long run.

PPC advertising definitely has a place in online marketing, but it doesn’t have to be your only long-term strategy.

Of course, the positive aspect of PPC advertising is the highly effective nature of where the ad ultimately appears. PPC is a highly targeted type of advertising that makes the best use of marketing dollars.

PPC advertising should not be avoided, but rather seen for what it is; a stop gap client conversion technique. The above statistics point to the fact that PPC advertising is effective, but not significantly more so than the site rankings of an optimized site.

When you have a plan that encompasses both short-term and long-term objectives you may likely see PPC advertising as a great way to jump start your online business, but there may come a time when you may find yourself relying on PPC advertising less and less. When that happens you can feel confident you have done an admirable job in optimizing your site for organic traffic.

It may sound as if I am anti-PPC, but the truth is they can provide a much-needed boost to your sales objectives and they can be a cost effective way to reach that goal.

No, I am not anti-PPC; I am simply a stronger proponent of site optimization.

Let me put it this way, you can ultimately have a successful website independent of PPC advertising, but you will always struggle if you only rely on PPC advertising without proper site optimization techniques.

They can and do work together, but if I had to choose one over the other I would work on SEO techniques first.

Consider the success of brick and mortar stores. They often rely heavily on advertising to create a customer base. At some point their reputation grows to such a degree that many people would shop there without paying attention to any advertising. The principle is to use the advertising as a mechanism to develop customers while waiting for the time when you are considered reputable. Once that is established the advertising may be less important.

The same concept applies to online business. Use PPC advertising, but work hard on your sites reputation and internal marketing structure. You will find a positive reward for the long-term investment of internal site building and optimization.

Pay Per Click Marketing - Does It Still Work

In theory, using the search engines sponsored Pay Per Click advertising is a quick and easy way to provide instant and targeted traffic to your web site. And historically this has always been a good option for new web sites that don’t have any other way to get traffic.

Buying traffic via a Pay Per Click can be a viable way to get instant-targeted traffic. And a few years ago it was quite cost effective. It was fairly easy to hit a 4-6 times pay through (spend $100, sell $4-600) on a well-designed campaign. Now it’s tough to get 2 or 3 times your investment back.

Why is it so difficult to get a good payback now? There are several factors that can have a huge impact on results.

Competition – There are many more advertisers and web sites now vying for the same keywords Google Arbitrage – This is mainly an Adsense ploy to buy clicks to create higher paying Adsense clicks Affiliate Sales – These are folks who advertise products for others and make a commission on the sales Google Crack Down – Google has realigned their algorithms to insure more accuracy in search results Google CTR Factor – If you don’t get a good ratio of clicks verses views, your cost goes up

Also throw in the fact that you need to write a short ad (25 characters for the headline, 35 for the two lines of copy) that gets clicks, and find keywords that are very target driven before you even get to the cost.

These factors have all caused the price of a keyword to skyrocket. If you look at a basic $35 digital product and below price level, it’s getting pretty tough to make a profit on high cost keywords. And consider the fact that many web sites sell a physical product that may only have a 50% markup, this can get real ugly if your campaign is tight (low return).

Just so we all are on the same page, let’s look at the basic goal of PPC campaign. It’s all about the conversion rate. That’s how many products you sell per the number of visitors (200 visitors and 4 sales gives you a 2% conversion rate).

You need to determine if the keyword cost will pay through on the revenue generated by the sales (example: if each click costs you .35, and your product sells for $35.00, and you only convert 1 in 100 - you will lose money). Keep in mind that you will normally pay 2-6% to your payment processor so even though $35 is paid you only net $33 or less. So if you spent $35 on 100 clicks, you just went backwards.

Which means if you have a $35 product, you need to convert at least 2 out of 100 to make a profit on the campaign. Several years ago it was very possible to stay around .05-.25 per keyword click cost. Now it is much more difficult to find keywords below the .30 and many times it’s much higher than that.

There are other means to improve your conversion rate. A well-written and effective sales pitch can increase sales. Running promotions, offering special incentives, and offering solid value helps too. I know people who get a 6% conversion rate so it is possible to have a larger budget for keywords.

I also know people who have no problem spending $1000 to make $2000. If you look at it in a pure business sense, you’re doubling your money. But if something goes awry, or Google makes a right turn and you still go straight ahead it can get darn expensive.

I know folks who are spending $3-4,000 a day on their PPC campaigns. And they are at least doubling and more the return on investment. But the sad thing is they used to spend $1-2000 a day to make the same amount of money. So in many cases the cost has doubled, the profit remained the same.

This does cut a lot of people out of the game. Between the high dollar costs and the lower return, many won’t or can’t risk that type of money. And learning how to find the right keywords, and then write an effective ad is no walk in the park for most. Pay Per Click advertising can and does work. But you really have to have a well thought out campaign from start to finish. Good products, sales pitch, incentives, keyword research, effective ad writing, and conversion rates that can pay through are necessary now more than ever with the high costs.

But you should have a well-rounded marketing plan that includes PPC along with other methods to bring targeted visitors to your web site. Organic search engine traffic (basic SEO), a good linking strategy, and even offline advertising are all necessary for generating a constant stream of potential buyers.

How To Track Your Adwords Campaigns For Free

What an exciting time it is to be an internet marketer. The internet has changed our lives so much these last ten years and it is revolutionizing the way we advertise. Before the internet it was very difficult to track the success of your advertising campaigns with any degree of accuracy. A business that wanted traffic to go to a special page on their site would be able to track how many people went to the page and the keyword, adgroup and campaign that produced the pageview.

The second tracking tool we will talk about is the mother load of all free tracking tools.

Google Analytics

A very powerful web analytics software. Google analytics gives you a lot of detailed info. It will track all of your campaigns not just Adwords campaigns. You can set it up to track natural search listings, Yahoo/Overture, other pay per click campaigns, referrals, banner ads, article marketing efforts, it will track pretty much anywhere you are receiving traffic from including offline campaigns.

It is easy to set up put a piece of java code all ready written for you by Google into the pages of your site. You will learn things like who is visiting your website and where are they coming from? US, Canada, UK?

How many pageviews is your site getting? How many visitors are leaving your site immediately? How many visitors are returning to your site? How many times are these visitors returning to your site?

It will also tell you which campaigns are getting the sales, and how long visitors are staying on your website. It can tell you which pages are drawing in your visitors and which aren't.

Google Analytics will tell you all of this and much more. It will tell you what is working well and what isn't with your website. You take this information and keep what works and tweak what needs some improving. Google Analytics is a must have for a serious internet marketer and it is totally free. The drawback is the time you have to wait from signing up to finally getting your account. It took me about 2 months and my contacts have told me that although wait time can vary due to supply and demand, 2 months is about average.

How To Implement Effective Bidding Strategies With Adwords

The first thing you want to decide is your budget. If you are not sure how well your website converts keep the budget and bids low. If you advertise elsewhere and your site converts well and makes you a healthy ROI then you will probably convert well with Adwords also. In this case I would still start with relatively low bids and if Adwords is producing a strong ROI increase the bids for more exposure.

Find as many relevant and specific keywords as possible. The more specific the keyword is to your business the less likely it is to have a high search volume. This can be made up for by 2 methods. Finding a lot of specific keywords and using a few general keywords.

If you had a website selling guitars general keywords would be:

Guitars
Electric guitars
Acoustic guitars

Specific keywords would be:

Fender Stratocaster SRV edition
American Fender Stratocaster for sale
Gibson Epiphone Electric Guitar

If you find you are getting a lot of traffic but few conversions delete some of the general keywords. Make sure your landing page is relevant to your visitor by offering them a product, service or information very relevant to the keyword that they found you on.

If Google deems your website as very relevant to a keyword you will get a low minimum cpc (cost per click). This will way heavily in your favor because your can bid low and the keyword will be active. Traffic will cost you less. The more relevant your page the higher your Quality Score and the more likely you are to ranked higher than your competitors, for a lower cpc. This will give you a better shot at increasing sales and ROI and out performing the competition while at the same time paying less for traffic than they do.

How To Make Money With Google AdWords

It used to be, back in the "Good Old Days" of Internet Marketing, that just about anyone with a copy of the eBook GoogleCash could make some money with Google AdWords. You simply found a product to promote from ClickBank, created a couple of ads where you linked directly to the vendor's website (marking your ad (aff) to show it was an affiliate ad), created a list of relevant keywords and then just sat back, waiting for those commission checks to roll in.

Ah yes, the "Good Old Days".

Well, the "Good Old Days" are gone, it's true. Now Google limits the number of ads pointing to a specific website to only one. The person with the highest bid price gets the link. This makes it almost impossible to do any "direct linking" anymore. You no longer need to mark your ads showing that you are an affiliate but nowadays you almost always have to have your own landing page where you direct your traffic.

In addition, with their recent update called the "Google Slap", Google has made it an absolute must that your landing page be one that is relevant to the ads you write and the keywords that you choose to bid on.

All-in-all, it is much harder to make any AdWords money today than it was even a year ago.

But it is still definitely possible to do so. You just have to work a bit harder doing your research before "going live" with your AdWords campaigns.

The first step to take is to find a hungry market. Most people tend to find a product to promote first and then they try to find the market to promote it to. This is like putting your socks on after you've put your shoes on. You've completed the correct actions but you've done them in the wrong order.

Next step is to do your keyword research to find the relevant keywords for your campaign. It is important to group your keywords into small Ad Groups which contain a common keyword or theme. You would not want to show an ad with the headline "Need AdWords Software?" with keywords like "adwords ebooks" or "find adwords tutorial". You'd want keywords like "buy adwords software" or "adwords software reviews" to match a headline like that.

To make this "common keyword" technique much easier, I've developed a keyword research tool called "Your KeyWord Assistant Pro" which makes grouping keywords into tightly focused groups (ready to paste into AdWords) a snap.

After coming up with your keyword lists you're ready to create your AdWords campaign. Make certain that your landing page (the webpage that you're directing your visitors to) is relevant to your ads and keywords or you are going to be penalized by Google in the form of outrageous minimum keyword prices. Should you find this happening, here's a technique to use to see if your landing page is the culprit.

Select one of the "expensive" keywords and do a search for it on Google. Make a note of the URL of the website that is in the #1 position of the natural search results. Then go back into your campaign and temporarily change the destination URL of your ad to the URL of the top website from the search you just did. Then proceed to see what the minimum bid that Google is now requiring. If it has dropped to a much more reasonable price, your landing page needs to be rewritten to reflect this keyword phrase.

There is definitely money to be made with Google AdWords today. You just need to do your research better and be prepared to create your campaigns differently than was required in the "Good Old Days"!
